Background and History

Jack grew up in a human civilization still struggling after the Disaster Era. A mutated beast killed his parents while they tried to protect him, leaving him with recurring nightmares. Before his school’s five-day graduation trial, he packed survival supplies and took the black metal pendant they had left him 905.

During the trial, an attacker killed two of Jack’s teammates and fatally wounded both Jack and his childhood friend Xi Ya. The metal object activated and appeared to be a “system.” Jack spent his own vitality to save Xi Ya, unaware that Benjamin was operating through the object from another world. Jack then hid Xi Ya, used scavenged energy sources to recharge the device, and repeatedly enhanced his body. He killed the attacker responsible for the massacre and later drained the energy core of an enemy passage formation, causing it to collapse 906 907 908 914 915.

After the trial, Jack and his classmate Gavin were recruited into the military and became known as the “Twin Stars.” Jack later learned that Gavin had died after a battle and that a Spirit Race being was controlling his body. When officials seized Jack and his metal object to study their life-enhancing power, he called on Benjamin for help. Freed by Benjamin, Jack killed the officials and Xi Ya, whose cooperation with them he regarded as a betrayal 917 920 921.

Jack initially rejected Benjamin’s offer of discipleship, accusing him of manipulation. He nevertheless accompanied Benjamin to Anvil Base, where he studied wizardry and taught survivors. After learning that Benjamin’s apparent body had been made from Gavin’s remains, Jack buried his friend and formally accepted Benjamin as his mentor 922 923 924 926 931.

Appearance

Jack’s first use of the metal object to save Xi Ya consumes enough vitality to leave him prematurely aged 906 907.

Personality

Jack is protective of those close to him, especially Xi Ya during the graduation trial. Even while weakened, he carries her to safety, conceals their trail and searches for a way to restore the metal object’s energy 906 908. He is also calculating: he rescues Gavin partly for the pursuers’ supplies and stays behind to fight more enemies for their Energy Stones, despite Gavin interpreting the act as a sacrifice 913.

His reliance on the supposed system never becomes unquestioning trust. Jack notices that its voice seems too intelligent, deliberately tests it by slowing his own development, and challenges Benjamin when he finally reveals himself 921. He remains guarded during their early travels, but applies himself to Benjamin’s lessons and eventually accepts him as a teacher 923 924 926 931.
