Ever since that blond DJ and his girlfriend had moved away, the nights had gotten a lot quieter.
Lin Baici went upstairs and saw that the iron door leading to the roof was open. The hot summer breeze carried the sound of crying through the gap.

Lin Baici gently pushed the door open and quickly scanned the area.
There was no one at the edge of the roof.
He turned and spotted Tang Qing huddled in a corner, hugging her knees like an injured young animal.
Lin Baici walked over.
Tang Qing was crying bitterly, her mind full of worries about what to do with her future and memories of the life she'd had before. She hadn't noticed Lin Baici coming over at all.
"Sister Tang!"
Lin Baici called out.
Startled by the sudden voice, Tang Qing shuddered. When she looked up and saw Lin Baici, she hurriedly wiped away her tears.

Tang Qing felt embarrassed. It was humiliating.
"Your eyes are swollen like peaches, and you're still saying nothing's wrong?"
By the moonlight, Lin Baici saw a handprint on Tang Qing's face. "Did your mom hit you?"
Tang Qing never went out at night and didn't have a boyfriend, so her mom was the only one who could've hit her.
"Yeah!"
Tang Qing knew she couldn't hide it, so she nodded.
"What was it this time?"
Lin Baici sighed.
Tang Qing had drawn the short straw with a short-tempered, son-preferring mother. She was like a punching bag, getting beaten whether there was a reason or not.
