At eight that evening, Su Yuan and the others hurried to the classroom, which served as the regular activity room for their Bioengineering Class One.
By the time they arrived, more than half the class was already there.
"Do you want to go up and give it a try?" Gao Jun pointed at the four words "Class Officer Elections" on the blackboard. Su Yuan shook her head and declined. "Better not. There are too many courses this semester."
"What a pity." Ji Yehao was surprised by her decision. With her "cute" appearance, Su Yuan had always been fairly popular in class. But perhaps because she lacked any sense of responsibility, she had always been too lazy to involve herself in class affairs. The old Youth League secretary was stepping down this semester, and he had thought Su Yuan was the obvious favorite and might finally change. Unexpectedly, she had become even more delicate.
Ji Yehao looked at Su Yuan, somewhat disappointed.
Su Yuan lowered her head. She should have been a very popular candidate for Youth League secretary this academic year, but after the changes in her body, she had resolved to minimize opportunities to stand out in front of crowds. So she had voluntarily withdrawn from the competition. Seeing that Su Yuan had no intention of running for class office, quite a few people looked at her in surprise.
Jiang Yuan, the arts and sports commissioner, was once again running for the same position. Surely no one would compete with her for such a thankless class officer role. The great beauty Jiang stared straight at Su Yuan with her large dark eyes, as though trying to find something on her face.
"See that? Your big sister's been staring at you the whole time," Gao Jun whispered.
"Get lost! Stay away from me." She lightly punched him on the head, then shot that certain "fatty" an unapologetic glare.
The second characters in Jiang Yuan and Su Yuan's names were pronounced the same, so many people jokingly called Su Yuan Jiang Yuan's little brother. Jiang Yuan did indeed take especially good care of her nominal "little brother," and occasional gossip naturally sprang up between them. Of course, Su Yuan knew that this "big sister" of hers actually liked their classmate Lu Chuan.
Certain that she had no interest in the class officer elections, Su Yuan watched her classmates as an outsider.
At that moment, a girl named Lu Wei was delivering a fluent self-introduction onstage. She was articulate and spirited, but for some reason, Su Yuan found her words grating. She frowned and thought about it for a while before realizing that Lu Wei's words concealed barbs beneath their softness.
She guessed that the girl was simply too competitive. Although university class officers did not hold much power and instead had countless tedious duties, a class was still a society in miniature. Some people consciously or unconsciously brought society's competitive atmosphere into the classroom. Used to being pampered, they refused to fall behind anyone in any respect, turning things into schemes and rivalries for no reason and tarnishing the friendship between classmates.
Lu Wei appeared poised and graceful during her speech, but her gaze frequently drifted toward Su Yuan. After not seeing him all summer, this delicate little boy seems even more pleasing to the eye.
In truth, she was worried Su Yuan would change her mind and suddenly step forward to compete with her for the Youth League secretary position. If Su Yuan did, she would probably win it.
"Su Yuan, this Lu Wei seems pretty concerned about you," Yang Xiaowei, seated beside Su Yuan, joked.
The pen in her hand spun continuously between her pretty fingers. Su Yuan kept her head down and did not reply. She felt even more irritated. She could more or less see it now: she had no intention of fighting over anything, yet in some people's eyes, she had inexplicably become a rival. She touched her face. Am I really that competitive?
The thought immediately amused her. That's called personal charisma! She happily immersed herself in her own charm.
"Don't worry. Leave it to me!"
Feeling something brush against her leg, Su Yuan jumped in surprise. Then she saw that Yang Xiaowei seemed to have made some kind of decision. After Lu Wei stepped down, he raised his hand high. Standing up and flashing a mouthful of white teeth, he grinned. "I want to run for Youth League secretary!"
Su Yuan was startled. She realized this guy was trying to stir things up!
"What's Xiaowei trying to do?" Gao Jun asked in surprise.
Su Yuan said, "His brain short-circuited..."
Yang Xiaowei had always been a good speaker, thanks to the family environment he had grown up in. He and Lu Wei competed for the Youth League secretary position, and the two had truly met their match.
During the vote count, Yang Xiaowei ultimately lost to Lu Wei by a few votes. Though he missed out on becoming Youth League secretary, he was unexpectedly elected class monitor instead. But with the way this guy was, could he really be a good class monitor?
On the way back, the magnolias lining both sides of the road were lush and green under the streetlights, their forms tall and majestic. Yang Xiaowei beat his chest and stamped his feet, looking deeply regretful. "Su Su, I'm done for! How did I go and put shackles on myself for no reason? Now the time I get to spend alone with my girlfriend has plummeted. I've made a cocoon and trapped myself... I've made a cocoon and trapped myself!!"
"I'm saying, everyone else fights to become class monitor, so why do you look like you've been drafted into forced labor? You're a mighty class monitor now, you know!" Su Yuan finally could not stand it anymore and said disdainfully.
"Wasn't I trying to stand up for you? Who knew it would turn out like this?" he muttered.
"You really do have a pig brain!" Su Yuan sneered. "After you competed with her like that, Lu Wei will probably think I'm the one trying to make trouble for her."
Some conflicts simply arose for no reason at all. Lu Wei was definitely hostile toward her. Psychologically speaking, the more someone disliked another person, the more they would assume that whether or not that person did something, it was deliberately meant to oppose them. Su Yuan had not even started complaining, yet Yang Xiaowei was already whining.
"Ye Hao, look at your Su Su. She's treating me like this!" Yang Xiaowei complained to Ji Yehao.
Ji Yehao never involved himself in these spur-of-the-moment arguments. When Yang Xiaowei appealed to him, he felt a headache coming on and blurted out, "You brought it on yourself!"
"Hey, who did you just say belongs to him?!" Su Yuan jumped in.
"I was only joking!"
Ji Yehao said seriously, "Don't make that kind of joke again."
"Fine, fine, I won't!" Yang Xiaowei immediately patted his chest and told Su Yuan, "Su Su, don't be afraid of Lu Wei. I'm a class monitor now, at least. I'll protect you."
Su Yuan did not know whether to laugh or cry. "What a huge official..."
