A line of bold characters hung above the main entrance to the Huahan Gene research building: "Cure several diseases, benefit all humankind."
Shen Qi and his party followed Director Li into the building's lobby. A giant wall screen immediately caught their eyes. A face in the style of Takashi Murakami occupied half the screen, looking a little frightening.
Inside the glass case beneath the screen were a microscope, thermometer, stethoscope, anesthetics, aspirin, kidney dialysis machine, oral contraceptives, endoscope, pacemaker... all important inventions of Western medicine.
The giant face on the screen spoke: "I will do everything in my power to take the medical measures I believe will benefit the patient. I will not cause the patient pain or harm. I will not give poison to anyone, nor will I instruct anyone else to use it. When I enter someone's home, it will be to treat the sick, not to do as I please. I will accept no bribes and will not seduce anyone..."
If he hadn't heard that famous passage, Shen Qi wouldn't have recognized the giant face, rendered in such an intensely violent cartoon style, as Hippocrates.
Hippocrates was a physician during the Periclean Age of ancient Greece, hailed by the Western medical world as the "Father of Western Medicine."
Shen Qi asked with interest, "Director Li, did you have Takashi Murakami design this face of Hippocrates?"
"Yes. It wasn't expensive—only a little over seven hundred thousand dollars. Director Lu gave me one of Takashi Murakami's hand-drawn works. It's in my office. I see Academician Shen has quite an interest in art, too." Director Li nodded and gestured invitingly. "Please, come in."
They walked farther inside along the western corridor. Screens lined both sides of it as well.
A collection of faces on the screens gazed at the people
