He watched the mushrooms carefully, only taking them away from the fire once their surfaces were slightly charred and began to bubble, and they were thoroughly cooked.
Someone had once been too eager to eat mushrooms, only to end up being eaten by them because they weren't cooked through... I mustn't make that mistake...
Derrick held the roasted mushrooms in one hand and picked up bread baked from Blackface Grass flour with the other. With the fragrant mushrooms to accompany it, even the normally bland bread seemed delicious. What had once been the mechanical chore of filling his stomach had become a pleasure.
He alternated bites of bread and mushrooms, occasionally gulping down some water, thoroughly enjoying his meal.
