Heaven and earth were unkind, treating all things as straw dogs!
There had originally been no immortals in this world. Yet since ancient times, people had witnessed the strange phenomena of the world around them—flashing lightning and rolling thunder, natural disasters and human calamities, countless deaths and injuries, misery everywhere—things utterly beyond human power to create or resist.
Thus, they came to believe that all manner of gods dwelled above the nine heavens, while beneath Jiuyou lay the resting place of departed souls and the halls of King Yanluo.
And so, tales of immortals spread throughout the world. Countless people bowed devoutly before the various deities born from their own imaginations, worshipping them, praying for blessings, pouring out their grievances, and keeping the incense fires burning strong.
Since ancient times, every mortal had to die. Yet people hated death and loved life, and the tales of King Yanluo and the Netherworld only added to their fear and suffering. Thus arose the notion of eternal life and immortality.
Compared to other species, humanity was physically disadvantaged, but there was no denying that they were the most intelligent of all living things.
Driven by the pursuit of immortality, generations of brilliant men had followed one after another, devoting their entire lives to painstaking research.
To this day, true immortality had yet to be found. However, some cultivators had grasped certain mysteries of heaven and earth, wielding formidable power in mortal bodies. With the aid of various secret treasures and magical artifacts, they could shake heaven and earth with the might of thunder. It was even said that some deeply accomplished predecessors could live for over a thousand years without dying.
Believing that attaining the Dao and becoming immortals was possible, even more people embarked upon the path of cultivation.
