In one, a member of the Human Race stood before a towering altar, holding a short dagger that he plunged into his own heart, as if intending to sacrifice himself. The altar's style was utterly unlike anything Pei Ling knew. It seemed especially tall and imposing, exuding an aura from the distant past.
The second showed a Sea of Corpses and Blood. A member of the Human Race stood silently in a pool of blood, bare-chested, clad in animal hide around the waist, with unbound hair and bare feet, a long blade in hand.
At his feet lay countless members of a different race, their eyes still open in death. They had purple skin, red eyes, a single horn growing from their foreheads, and inch-long hairs covering their cheeks. They looked half human, half beast.
The third showed the member of the Human Race from the first mural, seated on the ground and seemingly chatting animatedly with a figure standing atop a distant mountain.
Looking closely, Pei Ling saw that the figure on the mountaintop had skin as black as charcoal and a small, thin frame. He wore only a few scraps of cloth, with long hair and tattoos, and a snake hung from each ear. Something seemed to writhe in his eyes.
The member of the Human Race in the painting appeared especially tall and burly. Even standing on the mountaintop, the charcoal-black figure only reached his eye level.
