"Hiss! Damn it, go easier."
A low roar was followed by a loud slap.
Though Zhang Kun was injured, that slap was still more than a country village woman could bear.
Zhang Liu Shi, who had been struck, opened her mouth and spat out a bloody wad of phlegm. She flung the hemp cloth in her hand onto the table, planted her hands on her hips, and cursed like a shrew, "You dogshit bastard, all you know is how to hit me! If you've got the guts, go chop down Zhong Lin! You swagger around all day, but when it mattered, didn't you still get hacked by some little brat? You only know how to throw your weight around at home with me, you worthless coward."
Her words struck directly at Zhang Kun's sore spot. In an instant, his eyes turned bloodshot, like an enraged wolf.
"I'll fucking kill you."
As he spoke, he tried to climb up from the recliner, but the other two bad companions beside him immediately held him down.
These two were no better than Zhang Kun. Together, they were known as the Three Harms. The one on the left was skinny as a bamboo pole, nicknamed Skinny Monkey. His face was full of sleazy lechery, and he was lustful by nature.
The one on the right was short, with a long scar at the corner of his eye. Nicknamed Scarface, he wore a gloomy, vicious expression.
"Brother Kun, don't be angry, don't be angry. Great anger harms the body."
"That's right, anger harms the body. Sister-in-Law didn't mean it."
Zhang Liu Shi snorted coldly, swayed her waist, and headed toward the main hall, unwilling to stay here any longer.
Zhang Liu Shi was Zhang Kun's wife. Compared with the other "sturdy" women of Summer River Village, she was taller and more voluptuous. As she walked, her ample hips swayed constantly with her waist, while her chest was full and rounded. Though the skin exposed from working outdoors was somewhat darkened, the flaw did not hide the jade. In Summer River Village, she was a rare beauty of a married woman.
It truly answered the saying: "A good man gets no good wife, while a rogue marries a tender beauty."
Slap!
"Watch where you're looking, you motherfucker."
Zhang Kun slapped Skinny Monkey on the back of the head and barked angrily.
Skinny Monkey was not angry after being hit. He merely grinned. "Isn't Sister-in-Law just too pretty?"
"Get lost." Zhang Kun was like a man-eating tiger, breathing heavily. His eyes were bloodshot as he said, "I've hunted geese all my life, only to have one peck my eyes out. That little bastard actually ambushed me. Once I recover, I'll make him wish he were dead."
"Hmph! Why would Brother Kun need to do it himself? I'll go catch him right now and bring him back for Brother Kun to deal with. First, I'll break all four of his limbs and make him crawl over like a dog to apologize to Brother Kun in person."
Scarface's face twisted with savagery.
"That's right, and his little brother too. Catch him as well. There are people in the city who like little boys like that. We can sell him and make a tidy sum."
Skinny Monkey nodded in agreement.
Bang!
A dull crash sounded, followed by the courtyard gate being kicked open.
The three instinctively looked up, only to see two black dots flying straight at them.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
"Ah!"
"Ah!"
"My hand, my hand!"
"My leg, Zhong Lin..."
Zhong Lin stepped coldly into the courtyard, bow in his left hand, his right hand still trembling slightly.
Coming here this time really was the right choice. Before I even came in, I heard these three plotting how to harm my brother and me. The movies were right—when rooting out evil, you have to pull it out by the roots!
Zhong Lin had originally come only to "borrow a few things" from Zhang Kun. He had not expected to overhear the Three Harms plotting how to deal with the two brothers. How could he let that stand? Naturally, he had to strike first. After all, against three grown men, without some tricks up his sleeve, all he could do was wait to die.
Zhong Shi was only a child, and Zhong Lin himself had not fully developed yet. The only thing he could show off was his max-level archery. His body was frail as a pole, and after firing a few arrows, he would be out of strength. In a direct clash, he truly might not be their match.
When Zhang Kun and the other two saw Zhong Lin kick his way in, their expressions changed drastically. After all, they had just been plotting how to harm him!
Skinny Monkey's eyes rolled. Clutching his right hand, which had been shot through, he sprinted toward the courtyard wall, intending to climb over and escape.
"Heh, trying to run?"
Zhong Lin sneered and raised his bow again. With a crisp twang, the arrow pierced straight through Skinny Monkey's chest.
Skinny Monkey, who had been fleeing, lowered his head in disbelief and stared at the half of the arrowhead protruding from his chest. His eyes were full of confusion and terror. Then, with a thud, he fell to the ground, dead.
The ruthless sight made Zhang Kun and Scarface turn deathly pale.
"D-Da Linzi, it's... it's all a misunderstanding."
Zhang Kun was drenched in sweat, staring fearfully at the frail-looking Zhong Lin.
"Is that so? Did I hear wrong? Or have my ears gone bad?"
Zhong Lin's tone dripped with mockery, and his gaze was ice-cold.
"I..."
Whoosh!
A black streak flashed through the air. Just like Skinny Monkey, the arrow pierced through Zhang Kun's chest. Zhong Lin gave him no chance to explain and killed him with a single shot.
Scarface screamed. At that moment, his courage had utterly shattered. He got up and tried to run, but Zhong Lin had just shot through his calf. The pain was excruciating, and he could barely take a step.
"Ah... don't..."
Whoosh!
One arrow. Dead.
Max-level archery never disappointed.
Zhong Lin let out a breath and stood in the courtyard with a complicated expression. Three corpses lay sprawled crookedly in the not-so-large yard: one by the wall, one on the recliner, and one on the ground.
Zhong Lin did not feel the nausea or terror he had imagined. It was much like hunting, perhaps even simpler. The only thing shaken was likely his worldview from his previous life. After all, from birth until he transmigrated, he had lived in a safe society governed by law. Let alone killing someone, even seeing a dead person had been rare.
Clang!
Zhong Lin abruptly turned, raised his bow, strode quickly to Zhang Kun's corpse, yanked the arrow from his chest with force, then nocked it and aimed at the door.
"Come out."
"Don't kill me, don't kill me."
A trembling voice came from the main hall. Then Zhang Liu Shi cautiously poked her head out, her face filled with terror. When she saw the three corpses in the courtyard, she collapsed onto the ground, and the stench of urine drifted out from beneath her skirt.
Zhong Lin lowered his bow slightly, and his voice softened. "Don't be stupid, Sister-in-Law. I don't kill women. Go on, bring me the money Zhang Kun hid. Don't tell me there isn't any."
"Yes, yes, yes. I'll get it right away."
Hearing that she still had a chance to live, Zhang Liu Shi hurriedly tried to rise from the ground. Yet after three attempts, she barely managed to stand by bracing herself against the doorframe. She quickly headed into the main hall, though it was unclear where she went to rummage around.
Zhong Lin slowly lowered his bow, went over to the three corpses, and retrieved all five arrows. Then he walked to the west room and, not long after, came out with a quiver.
Zhang Kun was also a hunter, though he rarely went hunting. A poor student had many tools; although he seldom hunted, he had a full eighteen arrows.
Zhong Lin had come this time to "borrow arrows" from Zhang Kun. He simply had not expected things to develop this way. Still, his goal had been achieved.
