Meng Chao went on to ask, "Brother Yi, what are your hopes for the Playoffs?"
Wang Yi replied, "The championship. Without a doubt. After all, it's tied to my salary for the next four years."
Meng Chao understood.
At the start of the season, Wang Yi had made a bet with an ESPN reporter named Camille.
Wang Yi had said he would win four championships in a row.
If he failed to win the championship in any one of those four years, he would have to give Camille his salary for all four years.
After the three questions, Wang Yi said to Meng Chao, "Thanks for the interview, and I wish the Raptors all the best in the Playoffs."
Meng Chao didn't take advantage of Wang Yi's willingness to speak with reporters from China and push for a few more questions. After all, Wang Yi had a private life of his own.
If he set that precedent, other reporters would surely push their luck and ask more questions in the future.
That would eat into Wang Yi's private time.
After the interview, Meng Chao said to Wang Yi, "Brother Yi, since we're in Portland, let me treat you to a late-night meal."
"Sounds good. I was just wondering if I could score a free meal from you."
Wang Yi accepted Meng Chao's offer, then called his coach to let him know. After that, he went with Meng Chao to the parking lot and got into Meng Chao's Chevrolet.
As Meng Chao's car left the parking lot, a silver-gray Honda that looked a little beat-up pulled out behind them.
Inside it, a white man with a head of yellow curls drove while filming Wang Yi and Meng Chao's car with his phone.
They drove all the way to Chinatown.
