The Raptors called a timeout.
Head coach Dako addressed the players. "From here, our goal is to run down the clock. If we use as much time as possible on every possession, then we'll get at most two or three possessions in this final minute."
But Wang Yi disagreed. "Coach, I think we should focus on getting good shots. Didn't we design several plays where I'd receive the ball? Now's the time to use them."
The coach thought it over, then nodded. "That works too."
Wang Yi turned to Dauding.
"Before, we planned for me to shoot as soon as I got the ball. But Dauding has played so well today. We narrowed the gap to less than ten points in the third quarter, and we've hung in there against the Hornets until now thanks in no small part to him. So I think we should give him more chances. Once I get the ball, Dauding, keep moving. If there's a good opportunity, I'll pass it to you."
Dauding's heart skipped a beat.
Those earlier possessions hadn't been crucial, so after making several shots in a row, he'd been absolutely confident about taking the next one. But now, at such a critical, do-or-die moment, the team captain might pass him the ball. Could he handle that responsibility?
Wang Yi patted Dauding on the shoulder. "If you're open, don't hesitate. Even if you miss, I'm still here."
The head coach also spoke to Dauding. "If that's what Wang says, then go ahead and shoot without hesitation. If you miss, Wang and I will take responsibility."
Seeing that both the coach and the team captain meant it, Dauding felt a level of trust from the team unlike anything he'd experienced before. He nodded gratefully.
"Got it, captain. Coach."
Meanwhile, the Hornets' head
