Danny was back!
A lot of people thought the Kings were about to lose in the same old way again.
They had lost pretty much every one of their previous five games that way.
During the timeout, Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins told his players the same thing:
"Don't panic. They're falling back into their usual pattern. In each of the last five games, it's been the same. Wang Yi comes out looking unstoppable in the first quarter, but once we put targeted pressure on him, his efficiency drops, and the Kings' offense soon grinds to a halt."
"So we'll stick to our pace and play our game. Don't worry about them."
When they took the court again, they turned up the pressure on Wang Yi.
They trapped him with two defenders as usual, and had a third player roaming nearby.
The moment Wang Yi looked ready to drive, they would converge on him with all three defenders.
But that told Wang Yi the time had come.
So after drawing all three defenders, he began passing the ball out again and again.
Unfortunately, the other Kings players weren't shooting well today.
Wang Yi passed to them five possessions in a row before they finally made a three.
As a result, with three minutes left in the first quarter, Wang Yi had only two assists.
The Kings' owner and General Manager Divac were anxious on the sideline, but they both knew this was only De'Anthony's first game as head coach.
Even when you were sick, it could take hours for medicine to kick in.
And the Kings were a team of more than a dozen players.
Getting them to work together and play with real cohesion wasn't something that could be done in just one or two games.
