The story of the Necrons needs no further explanation. They were nothing but backstabbers. The Old Ones took pity on them and helped them, but they felt it wasn't enough and immediately turned around and attacked the Old Ones.
Then the Old Ones ground them into the dirt. This was a classic example of how a favor could breed resentment.
Even after being ground into the dirt by the Old Ones, these backstabbers still refused to repent. They created the C'tan and attacked the Old Ones again. They even listened to the C'tan's nonsense about how "the flesh is weak" and "mechanical ascension" was the way forward. They abandoned their bodies and souls, turning everything into cold, emotionless data.
And they actually had the nerve to blame the C'tan?
If players were asked to evaluate them, they would probably say that the entire life of the Necrons could be summed up as—their understanding was worthy of their suffering.
They got exactly what they deserved. They brought it all upon themselves.
The Flayer Virus was the same.
It appeared when the Necrons destroyed the C'tan. At the time, the Necrons betrayed the C'tan yet again, defeating a C'tan known as the Flayer. Before dying, however, the Flayer cursed the Necrons.
Oh, no. Strictly speaking, it was a virus.
Necrons infected by the virus developed a mad craving for flesh. They wanted to tear apart and destroy all organic life, devouring its flesh. Seen that way, it did seem somewhat like a Vampire's curse.
But there was one fundamental difference between the two.
Could the Necrons, with their cold, mechanical bodies, actually feel the warmth and texture of flesh?
Of course not!
And so, Necrons infected by the Flayer Virus became frenzied. Like starving Vampires, they desperately craved blood to satisfy themselves,
