Night fell.

As the last ray of sunlight disappeared beyond the horizon, the entire room sank into darkness. Mash lit an oil lamp and set it aside, while Duanmu Huai stood by the window, gazing outside.

The whole town seemed to fall silent with the coming of night. It appeared to have retained its old habits of working at sunrise and resting at sunset. When the sun went down, the townspeople began returning home. Once night had fully descended, the entire town became deathly quiet, with hardly a human voice to be heard. There were no lights along the dim roads, only the scattered glow from the windows of the houses, lending a trace of life to everything within sight.

A trace of life... huh?

Duanmu Huai stood before the window, staring outside. After arriving in this town, he had also tried sensing it with his own methods, but he had detected nothing unusual. His eyes alone told him that such a backward town could not possibly exist in modern civilized society, yet when he relied on anything besides his eyes, everything felt perfectly normal.
