Chen Changyuan returned to find the decoy dead and a message from Chen Yan promising to destroy those who aided the enemy.

• Chen Yan burned the contracts and led fewer than a hundred people away from the school, while many others stayed behind or had already surrendered to Chen Changyuan.
• Chen Changyuan and the teachers attacked a fleeing figure they believed was Chen Yan, but Chen Changyuan realized the figure was a decoy.
