Background / History
Covai came from a long-established viscount family whose fortunes had declined. Fearing that he could not secure the family’s noble status, he sought to advance himself through Iris Lizer, a Flower Knights reserve whose academic and knightly performance ranked first among all 172 candidates. He intended to take custody of Iris and have her bear the Covai family name, using her future standing within the Knights Order to elevate his own family. 7
At Hailan Lizer’s gathering, Covai presented himself as a considerate, elegant gentleman, dismissed the guests in the Covai family’s name, and encouraged Hailan to oppose her husband, Hom. He deliberately provoked Hom by revealing his affair with Hailan, Hailan’s plans for divorce and custody, and his own intention to claim Iris. 7
When Hom attacked him with a candelabra, Covai initially subdued him with ease. Their subsequent struggle turned lethal when a broken dinner knife became embedded in Hom’s left rib. Covai panicked after realizing he had killed Hom and attempted to conceal the crime. 7
Iris returned to find her father dying and attacked Covai, breaking his arm and severely disfiguring his face. To save himself, Covai falsely claimed that Iris was possessed by an Abyssal Demon. Hailan believed him and restrained Iris, allowing Covai to strike Iris in the head with a candlestick and kill her. 8
After Linton arrived at the manor, Covai tried to hide his crimes, retrieve Hom’s Offering Gold, and devise a plan to use Hom’s assets to win the apparent churchman’s support. 9 10 Linton’s puppetized Iris later confronted him in the study and killed him with a kitchen knife, ending his life in a single strike. 11
Appearance
Covai initially cultivated the image of a refined nobleman: he was described as having distinguished features, a gentle smile, and an elegant manner. 7
- Young and physically strong enough to overpower the untrained Hom. 7
- Carried himself with practiced composure, even during his initial confrontation with Hom. 7
- Sustained a bleeding head wound during the fight with Hom. 7
- Iris later broke his left arm, nose, and facial features while attacking him. 7
Personality
Covai was ambitious, calculating, and ruthlessly self-serving. He saw Hailan as a means to approach Iris and openly admitted that Iris’s exceptional prospects—not affection—motivated his involvement with the Lizer family. 7
He relied on a polished, trustworthy façade to manipulate others. When Iris accused him of murdering Hom, Covai immediately reframed her as demon-possessed, exploiting Hailan’s attachment to him to turn her against her own daughter. 8
Despite his poise, Covai became cowardly and desperate when threatened. He panicked at the prospect of exposure, tried to conceal the bodies, and pleaded to leave when confronted by the resurrected Iris. 9 11
