Reba and Zhang Yang locked eyes, and she couldn't help thinking, His eyes are so beautiful.
When she heard Zhang Yang's question, Reba, who was usually slow to warm up around strangers, answered almost without thinking, "I forgot to bring my textbook. I need to go back and get it."
"You forgot your textbook?" Zhang Yang glanced at his watch. "Class starts in eight minutes. You don't have enough time to run back to your dorm and make it back here, so you'll definitely be late. You'd be better off explaining the situation to the teacher and sharing a book with a classmate."
"Not today. We have an open-book quiz in class," Reba explained. "Not having my textbook will affect my grade, and I can't inconvenience my classmate either."
"Besides, I left my textbook in the library. If I run over there to get it now, I'll only be a few minutes late. It won't make much difference."
"I see." Zhang Yang nodded in understanding.
Sure enough, the Opportunity Guide had given him the best solution—and possibly the only one.
If he hadn't brought along the Introduction to Art textbook for first-year students, as the guide had instructed, he wouldn't have been able to solve Reba's problem, or at least not perfectly.
"Hold these for me."
Zhang Yang handed the materials he was carrying to Reba, who instinctively took them.
"As it happens, one of the books I brought today is the first-year Introduction to Art textbook."
Zhang Yang took off his backpack and set it in front of him. He unzipped it, pulled out several books, pretended to look through them, then took one out and held it up to Reba. "Is this the one?"
"Yes, that's it." Reba looked delighted, but then she asked in confusion, "Are you not going to need it?"
Zhang Yang pointed to the book he'd pulled from the top of the stack. "I'm a sophomore, junior. Of course I don't need a first-year textbook."
"Oh, you're an upperclassman?" Reba asked, only just catching on.
"That's right. I'm in the Student Union. I came to bring these materials to Teacher Jiang." Zhang Yang nodded toward the pile in Reba's arms. "You're lucky I happened to bring a first-year textbook today."
"Class is about to start. Use mine for now. I'll go look for your book in the library, and we can swap back after class."
Reba was very tempted. She didn't want to be late, but she also felt bad about asking Zhang Yang to go to the library for her. After a moment's thought, she said, "Senior, how about we exchange contact information?"
"I'll borrow your book for now. You don't need to waste time on my account. We can arrange a time and place later, and I'll come return it to you."
"And I won't trouble you to get my book from the library. I'll go there myself after class."
Zhang Yang wasn't surprised by Reba's decision.
He knew a little psychology and could tell that Reba was the sort of person who didn't like inconveniencing others.
"What's your phone number?" Zhang Yang asked, seemingly agreeing with her decision.
Reba felt relieved and immediately gave him her number.
Zhang Yang entered it and called her. When her phone rang, he hung up.
Putting his phone away, Zhang Yang said, "You don't have to be so polite. I was planning to study at the library until dinner anyway. That's why I brought so many books with me."
"Just tell me roughly where you were sitting in the library earlier, and I'll look for your book."
"If you wait until after class to look, someone might have taken it by then, and it'll be even harder to find."
"If I find it, I'll text you. After class, bring my book to the library and we can trade."
Reba thought Zhang Yang made a good point. Since he was going to the library to study anyway, she wouldn't really be troubling him. She nodded. "Thank you, Senior. I'll leave it to you, then. I was sitting by the window in Section X on the second floor."
"You're welcome." Zhang Yang slung on his backpack and turned to leave.
Reba took the materials to the lectern and set them down, then returned to her seat with the textbook.
"Reba, did someone find your book and bring it back?" Yuan Bingyan leaned over and asked quietly.
Zhang Yang had been standing near the outer edge of the doorway, and Reba had been blocking him. No one in the classroom could see him. They could only hear that Reba was talking to a guy.
"No, it's a senior's book. He's in the Student Union and came to bring some materials to Teacher Jiang. I got lucky." Reba told Yuan Bingyan everything she and Zhang Yang had said at the door, without hiding a thing.
Yuan Bingyan didn't think much of it. She smiled and said, "You really were lucky. Is the senior who lent you his book handsome?"
"I think he's really handsome. He's the most handsome guy I've ever seen." Reba answered without hesitation.
That caught Yuan Bingyan and Mi Re's interest, and they wanted to hear more.
But the teacher walked into the classroom just then. Her stern expression instinctively silenced everyone.
"All right, let's start by taking attendance." The teacher took out the attendance sheet.
Meanwhile, Zhang Yang strolled toward the library.
"So this opportunity is just about helping Reba with a small favor so I can get to know her?"
Honestly, Zhang Yang thought this opportunity was nothing special.
With his position as vice president of the Student Union and his looks, was getting a junior's contact information really that hard?
Reba would become a Top Female Star in Chinese Entertainment, just like Liu Shishi, a First-Tier Female Celebrity in Domestic Entertainment—but that was all.
Liu Shishi could at least put in a good word for him. Reba had stayed Jiaxing's Top Sister all this time. She had plenty of popularity but hardly any decent works. She was a vase with a little water in it.
"I want opportunities. I want a career. I don't need you to help me pick up girls." Zhang Yang voiced his thoughts to the Opportunity Manual, one-sidedly.
Nearly ten minutes later, he found a book on the floor near the seat Reba had described.
"I found your book," Zhang Yang texted her.
At the other end, Reba felt her phone vibrate and opened the message.
Relieved, she replied, "Thank you, Senior. I'll come find you in the library after class."
Zhang Yang replied, "Okay. I'm sitting near the seat you mentioned."
Reba immediately sent back, "Mm-hmm."
After thinking it over, she started typing a message to ask Zhang Yang's name so she could save his contact and recognize him.
She was sure a senior that handsome couldn't be a nobody on campus, but she couldn't recall his name at the moment.
Before she could send the message, however, a woman's stern voice came from the front of the room. "You there. Tell us, what are the essence and characteristics of art? How do you understand them?"
Right after that, Reba felt Yuan Bingyan tug at her clothes.
A chill crept up her back. Reba looked up stiffly and met the teacher's half-amused gaze.
She hurried to her feet, looking and feeling flustered.
The teacher didn't press her. She simply repeated, "Reba, tell us how you understand or would sum up the essence and characteristics of art."
Reba quickly picked up her textbook. She remembered that the teacher had just been discussing the essence and characteristics of art.
"Hm?"
Her gaze fell on the section of the textbook that should have been blank but was now filled with notes. Reba's eyes widened. "That senior is amazing!"
