A pulse was just what it sounded like, something a little like the human heartbeat.

Each rise and fall of a heartbeat could be thought of as a wave, and these repeated, periodic waves were called pulses.

As for the first real-world technology to use the concept of a pulse, that was the pulse generator, invented in 1924 by the German Marx—not that Marx, mind you, but E. Marx.

The so-called pulse generator was the famous Marx generator.

It mainly used a low-voltage DC power source to generate high-voltage pulses. It was a high-voltage device that charged capacitors in parallel and discharged them in series.

It could simulate lightning and switching overvoltage, so it was often used in high-energy physics experiments involving insulation impulse withstand tests, dielectric breakdown, and discharge.

By this point in human technological development, pulses had already found more than thirty technical applications.

But

not one of those thirty-plus technologies had the slightest connection to the words "pulsar."
