Ch. 81Family Gathering
Key events
- The royal family gathers in the Red Keep’s Godswood. Viserys, healthier but still frail, confronts Aemond over his harsh security policies in King’s Landing: the Flea Bottom purge, curfew, manhunt, and encouragement of family members reporting on one another.
- Aemond argues that dependable punishment—and fear of its consequences—creates order. He invokes Targaryen history, claiming the dynasty’s dragons and reputation for violence secured obedience. Viserys counters that Jaehaerys ruled peacefully without relying on fear and criticizes Aemond’s severity. Aemond says he has shown mercy by sending minor offenders to “Labor Reform.” Viserys ends the dispute, accepting that the city is now orderly.
- Viserys holds his young children, Isera and Jaehaerys, reflecting on the simplicity of childhood. He then summons Aegon and addresses the unresolved succession.
- Viserys announces that after the Tournament he will formally change the succession: Aegon will become the sole rightful heir to the Iron Throne. He says Rhaenyra will retain Dragonstone but is unfit to rule.
Character developments and interactions
- Aemond presents himself as a firm, deliberate ruler and defends coercive order as necessary governance. He is touched by Helaena’s support.
- Helaena, usually withdrawn from political discussion, openly backs Aemond, saying she will always believe in him.
- Viserys asserts his authority over both policy and succession, though his fatigue and reflections on age and childhood reveal his vulnerability.
- Aegon is stunned by being named heir and struggles to respond; his earlier portrayal as carefree and immature contrasts with the burden now placed on him.
- Alicent reacts with relief and triumph, seeing the decision as a long-awaited victory over Rhaenyra. Aelin is excited but tries to contain herself. Aemond watches the succession announcement calmly.
Significant themes
- Order versus tyranny: Aemond sees predictable fear as the basis of safety; Viserys worries that harsh methods cross into oppression.
- Power and historical memory: The family disputes whether Targaryen authority rests on good governance or the threat of dragons.
- Succession and factional conflict: Viserys’s decision formally favors Aegon and appears to end the divide between Greens and Blacks, while decisively reshaping the royal family’s political future.
- Age and responsibility: Viserys’s tenderness toward the children contrasts with the weight of the choices he must make for the realm.
