Background / History

Banda Mikiya discovered Akutsu as a new Yamabuki student with extraordinary reflexes, speed, power, flexibility, and balance. Although Akutsu initially viewed tennis as uninteresting, Banda provoked his competitive instincts by pointing him toward Hyotei’s strong freshmen and brought him into Yamabuki’s tennis club 34.

Before joining Yamabuki, Akutsu had only played tennis briefly at age ten. He entered the club after the school year began, yet rapidly rose through its ranks; he could defeat Yamabuki’s older players and reached national level in under a year 147 389.

His first decisive tennis setback came against Hyotei’s Kamikawa Mutsu. Kamikawa defeated him 6–0, exposing Akutsu’s lack of strategy, match experience, and endurance despite his exceptional athletic ability 38 68. Rather than making him quit, the loss became his primary reason to keep playing: he would not give up tennis until he defeated Kamikawa 215.

Akutsu became Yamabuki’s central singles player and later its club president. His singles victories carried Yamabuki to the National Tournament semifinals, the school’s best result, while his growing strength forced him to shoulder much of the team’s competitive burden 147 216 356.

At the U-17 training camp, Akutsu challenged Oni Juro in a Shuffle Battle and was shut out 6–0. He subsequently trained under Mifune Nyudo on the back mountain, mastering Ten-Ball Consecutive Strikes within a month before being sent back to Yamabuki 314 315 323.

After Japan’s junior-high circuit, Akutsu left for America to pursue professional tennis and continue his pursuit of Kamikawa. He later represented America at the U-17 World Cup 449 493.

Appearance

Akutsu is a pale-faced junior-high player with a fierce, defiant expression and an intimidating presence.

  • Initially introduced with a mushroom haircut and pale complexion 34.
  • His right hand was heavily bandaged from frequent fighting when Kamikawa first found him at Yamabuki 36.
  • Later appears with pale short hair at the National Tournament 390.
  • Wears dyed gray hair as a member of the America representative team 492.
  • His blood-red or scarlet aura manifests during high-intensity matches 230 497.

Personality

Akutsu is blunt, violent, and confrontational. He dismisses opponents, openly provokes stronger players, and has little patience for convention or polite restraint. His reputation extends beyond tennis; his presence alone deters Yamabuki’s delinquents, and he has fought tennis players and karate-club members alike 260 327.

Despite his early claim that tennis was boring, Akutsu despises losing more than he dislikes the sport. Defeat drives him to seek rematches, challenge stronger opponents, and improve during competition rather than withdraw 146 147 215.

His fixation on defeating Kamikawa initially gives him a reason to play. After experiencing a future scene during the World Cup, he finds a broader reason to continue tennis with dignity beyond that single rivalry 531.

Abilities & Skills

Exceptional Physical Talent

Akutsu possesses extraordinary natural athleticism, including reaction speed beyond normal human comprehension, explosive power, balance, flexibility, and dynamic vision 34 38.

  • Can make shots and recoveries that appear physically impossible for ordinary players 36 217.
  • Covers the court through abrupt changes of direction and bizarre body positions 38 98.
  • Uses explosive sprints, mid-air adjustments, and powerful net play to convert defense into attack 65 494.
  • His physical development and training caused his speed to increase by 10% during a single U-17 training session 313.

Instinctive Offensive Tennis

Akutsu’s tennis is aggressive, unpredictable, and largely driven by instinct. Every movement is directed toward creating offense; even defensive returns are forcibly turned into attacking shots 98 217.

  • Launches relentless power-based attacks and fast serves.
  • Alters his attack path mid-air in response to an opponent’s movement 215.
  • Makes conventional data analysis ineffective because his motions and timing are difficult to predict 98 217.
  • Prolonged, high-intensity rallies can rapidly drain his stamina, particularly against opponents who force him to chase difficult serves 218 230.

Rapid Learning and Match Adaptation

Akutsu grows while competing, absorbing experience directly from matches rather than relying solely on training 146.

  • Improved from a Metropolitan-level player to near national level in just over half a year 147.
  • Learned a modified form of Sanada’s Swift as Lightning after facing him 218.
  • Recognizes opponents’ patterns and techniques quickly, including Atobe’s habitual serving choices 494.
  • Recovers and readjusts his condition unusually quickly under match pressure 392.

Thunder

Thunder is Akutsu’s own destructive variation of Sanada’s Swift as Lightning.

  • Combines explosive speed with Akutsu’s natural power and violent aura 230 262.
  • Has greater destructive force than Sanada’s original technique 262.
  • Represents Akutsu’s acceptance of direct confrontation in tennis 218.

Blood-Red Aura

Akutsu can emit a violent blood-red aura that heightens his concentration, speed, instincts, and destructive power 230 262.

  • Its violent presence was sensed by multiple national-level players after his match with Sanada 230.
  • Enhances the effectiveness of Thunder while reducing its drawbacks 262.
  • Does not eliminate his need for a broader technical arsenal; Tezuka identified Akutsu’s limited number of tennis skills as a major weakness 264.

Ashura God Path and Eighth Consciousness

Through Hell Road training and his obsession with victory, Akutsu enters the Ashura God Path and develops an Eighth Consciousness state 389 390 495.

  • Mu-Mei-Shiki allows him to act through pure consciousness rather than deliberate thought 495.
  • Generates multiple simultaneous attack patterns, making his returns difficult to read and mentally exhausting for opponents 495 496.
  • Alaya-vijnana further intensifies his crimson aura, perception, and dominance 497.
  • These states place immense pressure on his body and can be disrupted by sufficiently powerful mental opposition 391 531.

Metsushiki

Metsushiki is Akutsu’s more deeply controlled Eighth Consciousness state 531.

  • Enhances his brain and briefly lets him predict an opponent’s attack path 531.
  • Uses subconscious judgment, reflexes, and body flexibility to create multiple possible attacks 531.
  • Can alter his hitting direction after observing the opponent’s movement 531.
  • His speed steadily rises while he maintains the state 531.

Muga no Kyochi and Light Ball

By the U-17 World Cup, Akutsu can use Muga no Kyochi and the Light Ball 496.

  • Employs the Light Ball alongside his instinctive aggressive style 496.
  • Had already shown the aptitude to master the Light Ball during his back-mountain training 323.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Tennis racket — His standard match equipment.
  • Cross Racket — Used during and after his back-mountain training; Akutsu practiced and fought with it before leaving the U-17 camp 314 323.

Relationships

  • Banda Mikiya — Yamabuki’s advisor and Akutsu’s mentor; discovered his talent, recruited him into tennis, and repeatedly pushed him toward stronger opponents 34 147.
  • Kamikawa Mutsu — Primary rival and the reason Akutsu continues playing tennis; Kamikawa’s repeated victories drive Akutsu’s growth, while both acknowledge each other’s talent 68 218 390.
  • Sanada Genichiro — Frequent rival whose direct style and Swift as Lightning influenced Akutsu’s development of Thunder; Sanada recognizes Akutsu’s extraordinary rate of improvement 147 230.
  • Tezuka Kunimitsu — Hyotei captain and a major benchmark for Akutsu; their National Tournament match forces Akutsu to test his blood-red aura against elite tennis 261 262 264.
  • Oni Juro — U-17 camp opponent who shut Akutsu out in a Shuffle Battle; Oni regards him as a once-in-a-decade talent and originally intended to groom him as a successor 315 449.
  • Keigo Atobe — World Cup opponent and rival; their match pushes Akutsu to manifest Mu-Mei-Shiki and Alaya-vijnana 493 495 497.
  • Tan Taiichi — Yamabuki junior who admires Akutsu and was inspired by him to become a regular player 390.
  • Sengoku Kiyosumi — Yamabuki teammate whom Akutsu defeated 6–0 in a school ranking match; Sengoku nevertheless attempts to keep Akutsu engaged with the team after his losses 98 68.
