Geography and Access
- The Six Continents lie near the center of Lake Möbius and are minuscule compared with the Dark Continent. Netero says humanity once lived on the Dark Continent before migrating to the Six Continents 279.
- By sea, ships must pass the Gate of Limit, which divides Lake Möbius into inner and outer rings. Gatekeepers guard its east and west passages; Guides assist travelers onward to the Dark Continent 372 457.
- The land publicly presented as the Dark Continent during the V6 colonial voyage is an outpost, called the Imaginary Dark Continent by insiders. The true Dark Continent lies beyond a second maritime boundary and the perilous Dark Sea 371 372.
- Gelman’s Teleport Lantern provides a separate means of travel. His first fixed landing point is the Arid River Valley, though using the lantern imposes cooldowns and can give him negative traits 6 134.
Environment and Inhabitants
- Terrain encountered by explorers includes the Arid River Valley, primeval forests, volcanic areas containing enormous World Trees, the Ancient Labyrinth, the Ash White Desert, and the Treacherous Mountains 12 90 96 358 365 500.
- The continent’s creatures include giant beasts, plants, microorganisms, Magical Beast Demi-humans, Evil Spirits, and Abnormal Demons. Don Freecss’s records distinguish these categories rather than treating every nonhuman life form as a single kind of beast 209 499.
- In the Arid River Valley, camouflaged Meat Sucking Bugs are preyed on by Poison Mist Centipedes; Gale Ripple Moths disperse the centipedes’ poison with their wings 12 13.
- Demi-human societies include the Moose Centaurs and other members of the Lesser Demi-human Watch Alliance. Its tribes maintain settlements, trade, and their own languages and scripts 301 365 370.
- Nen Qi is much denser than around the inner sea of Lake Möbius. Newly arrived ordinary people can feel ill, while trained Nen users can regulate their exposure 499.
Disasters and Hopes
Expeditions seek valuable “Hopes,” but encounters with their associated “Disasters” have historically caused severe losses. Earlier human teams brought back Disasters without securing a Hope; Gelman’s group later brought back one 54 158 223.

Exploration History
Don Freecss recorded his travels on the Dark Continent in New World Records. The V5 recognized the value of its information, recalled most copies, and pursued the Five Great Hopes. Earlier expeditions suffered heavy casualties, leading the V5 to prohibit public voyages; Netero also made exploration taboo within the Hunter Association 158.
Gelman first reached the Arid River Valley by lantern and retreated after roughly a minute, recognizing that he needed greater strength, supplies, and a team. His later expeditions explored the continent’s food chains, recovered materials and Hopes, and established a castle around a tower in the Ancient Labyrinth 6 13 223 365.
The Kakin Empire’s declaration prompted a V6-backed voyage, while Netero and Beyond planned separate expeditions to the true Dark Continent 341 371 372. Gelman subsequently led a joint exploration team toward the Ancient Labyrinth to secure access to the All-Curing Herb. Of the 1,000 people assigned to the operation, 200 were to accompany him there; the others were to remain at Transfer Base Island 497.
