Background / History

Killua is the silver-haired third son of the Zoldyck Family. During Gelman's first departure from the family estate, Killua is seen feeding the giant hound Mike. He immediately challenges Gelman, attacking with Snake Bite and Body Bend; Gelman's Malice frightens both Mike and Killua, forcing him to retreat into a tree. 85

Rather than letting the encounter end there, Killua follows Gelman to the Testing Door to ask about the “special skill” that stopped Mike. Gelman identifies it as Nen, but refuses to teach him directly, telling Killua to seek instruction after passing the Hunter Exam. This encounter leaves Killua increasingly curious and determined to learn Nen. 86

Killua later passes the 287th Professional Hunter Exam, though Kurapika defeats him during the final stage. Immediately afterward, Illumi reveals himself as Killua's brother and takes Killua back to the Zoldyck estate. 303 During his confinement, Killua is tortured and hides the marks on his body before meeting Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio. 330

Silva eventually permits Killua to leave with his friends, despite objections from Kikyo and Illumi. Gelman agrees to act as Killua's guardian outside Mt. Kukurou, a decision Killua accepts readily. 331 332 333

Personality

Killua is curious, competitive, and highly resistant to being controlled. His first response to Gelman's frightening power is fear, but he overcomes it enough to chase Gelman down and demand an explanation about Nen. 85 86

Although raised as an assassin, Killua values friendship deeply. He worries that Illumi may harm Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio to force him back onto the Zoldyck path, and he considers asking Gelman for help to protect them. 331 He also rejects Kikyo's claim that time outside the estate is “playing,” insisting that his Hunter Exam and training are meaningful. 331

Killua's strongest loyalty is toward Alluka and Nanika. After recovering memories sealed by Illumi's Nen Needle, he realizes how thoroughly his family had manipulated his return and resolves to protect both sisters regardless of the consequences. 379 525 526 He also recognizes that becoming stronger is necessary if he wants to protect them rather than merely oppose his family emotionally. 384

Silva ultimately appoints Gelman as Killua's guardian and permits Killua to leave the estate. 303 330 331 333

Sky Arena and Greed Island Training

Killua learns Nen from Wing, reaches the Sky Arena's 200th floor, and later trains on Greed Island with Gon and Kurapika. He develops Lightning and Godspeed, but Gelman rejects his application to join the Hunter Association exploration team because he and Gon still lack sufficient experience. Instead, Gelman requires them to clear Greed Island's main quest by land. 367 368 378

Nen Needle Removal

Gelman discovers and removes Illumi's Nen Needle from Killua's forehead. The removal restores memories of Alluka and reveals that the Needle had implanted an instinct to flee from opponents he could not defeat. Killua accepts that the Needle once protected him, but recognizes that it has become an obstacle to his growth. 379

Alluka and Nanika

Killua returns to Mt. Kukurou with Gelman and Gon to reunite with Alluka. Learning more about Nanika's wishes, tantrums, and the danger created by the Zoldyck family's experiments, Killua conceals his apparent ability to command Alluka and Nanika without restriction. 380

When Nanika heals Zobair, Killua openly declares that he will protect both Alluka and Nanika. Gelman later seals their coaxing-and-wishing ability, allowing the sisters to live more normally and removing the immediate threat that justified their confinement. 525 526

Killua continues training and exploring with Gon, eventually traveling to the New Continent. Twelve years later, he and Gon are celebrated as the younger generation's “Twin Stars of Hunters.” Killua does not wish to inherit the Zoldyck Family business and spends little time at Mt.
