Beta quickly leaned out to scan the area, then immediately ducked back behind cover. Reaching behind himself with his right hand, he felt two still-hot bullets deeply embedded in his body armor. He carefully slipped his hand inside his vest and felt along the skin of his back. Only after confirming that it wasn't wet did he pull his hand out to check. His palm was clean, without a trace of blood.
