Background / History
Seclusion and Poison Backlash
Dugu Bo controlled the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well before Lin Jin approached him. He relied on its unusual environment to suppress the poison backlash of his Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor and survive. That poison had also eroded his bloodline and passed to Dugu Yan 24 38.
Despite occupying the valley for decades, he did not understand its value as a treasure basin. He regarded its immortal herbs as poisonous weeds and its spring as dangerous water, using the location for relief rather than recognizing its potential to cure him 40 43.
Both Martial Soul Hall and Qian Renxue, acting as Heaven Dou’s crown prince, had unsuccessfully tried to recruit him. His poison abilities made him strategically valuable despite his refusal to join them 30.
Imperial Poisoning and Recruitment
Emperor Xue Ye ordered the arrest of Dugu Bo and Dugu Yan on suspicion of colluding with Prince Xue Xing to poison the imperial family. Lin Jin detained Dugu Yan and used her to draw her grandfather out of the Sunset Forest valley. Dugu Bo denied the accusation and threatened to kill the intruders, but Yang Wudi’s intervention and the danger to his granddaughter prevented an immediate battle 37 39.
Lin Jin offered to clear his name and cure both grandfather and granddaughter in exchange for cooperation. By accurately describing Dugu Bo’s painful symptoms and Dugu Yan’s inherited condition, he persuaded the furious elder to accompany them to the palace 40.
At the palace, Lin Jin explained that Dugu Bo had previously lent out his Fourth Soul Skill’s poison for self-defense. The emperor’s actual poison was the Breaking Clan’s Seven-Colored Splendor; the accusation against Dugu Bo had been a scheme to recruit him. Although he realized he had been manipulated, he assisted Yang Wudi’s detoxification to secure the promised treatment for Dugu Yan 41 42.
Cure and Alliance with Lin Jin
After leaving the palace, Dugu Bo seized Lin Jin by the collar and demanded answers. Lin Jin argued that his association with Prince Xue Xing would have made him a suspect regardless, then took the group back to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well to fulfill his promise 43.
Lin Jin and Yang Wudi located Dragon Tongue Grass for Dugu Bo and the Earth Dragon Golden Gourd for Dugu Yan. Dugu Bo acknowledged his earlier narrow-mindedness, bowed to Lin Jin, and promised that a successful cure would leave him owing Lin Jin his life. The herb eliminated his backlash poison, and he subsequently accepted responsibility for protecting Lin Xue and Dugu Yan 44 46.
Two years later, he entered seclusion for a breakthrough after warning Flender and the others not to trouble Lin Xue. On emerging at Level 92, he was enraged to learn that Shrek’s students had ignored his warning. He offered to settle the matter himself, only to discover that Lin Jin had already killed Yu Xiaogang and Liu Erlong and severely injured Flender and Zhao Wuji 98 102.

| Final strain of the siege | His poisonous mist dwindles to faint wisps as the defenders approach their limits 248. |
| Imperial recognition | Receives gold, silk, and the honorary title of consecrated elder for his service at Dou Ling Pass 256. |

- Hair and beard: Dark green; his hair remains long after his recovery 39 102.
- Eyes: Emerald-green and sharp, with increasingly intense jade light after refining Dragon Tongue Grass 39 46.
- Before treatment: Poison erosion leaves his skin dull and his spine slightly hunched 46 102.

Personality
Dugu Bo is reclusive, eccentric, and fiercely proud of his standing as a Titled Douluo. He reacts angrily to threats and to Yang Wudi’s criticism of his medicinal knowledge. He openly admits that he is not a good person, but rejects the accusation that he would stoop to secretly poisoning the imperial family 30 39 40 43.
His granddaughter’s safety outweighs his pride. He accepts humiliation and cooperates with Lin Jin rather than risk her death from either the imperial charges or inherited poison backlash. Once the promised treatment proves genuine, he shows gratitude and becomes a dependable protector of Lin Jin and Lin Xue 40 42 44 46 113.
He is ruthless toward enemies but affectionate toward those under his protection. He threatens to eliminate Yu Tianheng if he troubles Dugu Yan again, while greeting Dugu Yan and Lin Xue with a kind, doting manner after seclusion. His exchanges with Lin Jin also reveal blunt humor and a willingness to acknowledge strength that surprises him 102 103 123.
