For the past few days, Yan Yang had been fussing over this Pokémon Egg so much that he barely went out to play with his little friends.
Having absolutely no experience incubating an egg, he asked the older Pokémon who were already mothers. However, they all told him not to be overly careful. As long as he kept it at a suitable temperature, it would be fine. Young Pokémon were not that fragile, so there was no need to worry about them getting sick or even dying.
Yan Yang knew that Pokémon had excellent constitutions, but this was his own Pokémon. No matter what, he had to put more care into it.
So that the egg could hatch smoothly, Yan Yang began figuring things out on his own.
Every day, he held the egg in his arms, trying to incubate it with his body heat. Spring had only just arrived, and the weather was still rather chilly. He could not let the egg catch cold. Besides, Yan Yang believed that the Pokémon inside could sense some of what was happening outside. When it finally hatched, it would surely be more affectionate toward him.
Yan Yang wrapped the egg in his scarf. Since it was a Fire-type Pokémon Egg, it should need warmth and heat more than other Pokémon eggs. He had the thick clothes Entei had brought back last time, and since it was no longer as cold as before, he did not need the scarf for the time being.
Whenever the weather was clear, Yan Yang took the Pokémon Egg outside to bask in the sun and let it absorb plenty of sunlight. He did not know who had told him that this would be helpful to the creature inside the egg.
Yan Yang watched the egg glimmer faintly beneath the sunlight and wondered what Pokémon might be inside.
He had already checked it with God's Eye, but it did not provide any specific information about the egg. It only gave an approximate hatching time—about two more weeks.
That was fine too. The surprise and joy of finding out what kind of Pokémon it was after it hatched would be doubled.
The possibilities were not that broad, anyway. There were not many Fire-type Pokémon in the Kalos Region to begin with, so it should have been easy to guess.
Fennekin? Fletchling? Litleo? It seemed like there were only those three. He was not very familiar with Pokémon from the Kalos Region, and those were the only three he remembered, though he was not entirely sure.
Of course, it could also be a Fire-type Pokémon from another region. After all, many Pokémon were not limited to a single region.
He probably preferred Litleo a little more. After all, its evolved form, Pyroar, was rather cool and somewhat similar to Entei. Maybe he just liked lion-like Pokémon?
Fine, he would stop pretending. He just liked big lions.
Still, no matter which Pokémon hatched in the end, Yan Yang would be happy.
This was a Pokémon that had been with him since it was still inside an egg.
Entei, who had been quietly watching from the side, looked at Yan Yang lovingly tending to the egg with a silly smile on his face. He still wore that indifferent expression, though there was a trace of doting affection in it.
He thought Yan Yang was adorable no matter what he did, especially when he was so serious about it. That earnest yet adorably foolish look of his was simply too lovable to Pokémon. As expected of his own child.
Entei was also looking forward to this Pokémon's birth. After all, it would be Little Sun's first Pokémon of his own. As a human, he should be extremely happy about it.
No, no, did he not count? He was Little Sun's first Pokémon. Yan Yang simply had not realized it yet. Entei let his thoughts wander wildly.
Yan Yang had no idea about Entei's little thoughts. He had already begun planning how to care for and train the Pokémon inside the egg once it hatched and made it through its vulnerable early stage.
While it was sunbathing, an unfamiliar Spearow flew onto the eggshell. It pecked at the egg beneath its claws with its beak, then shook its head in disappointment and spread its wings to fly away.
Yan Yang had no idea what the Spearow wanted. At first, he thought it was going to do something to the egg, and he had been ready to chase it away. Yet the Spearow flew off instead, looking rather disappointed.
Could it have lost an egg of its own? No, that could not be right. Leaving aside the fact that it was still in its base form rather than the evolved Pidgeot, so where would it have gotten an egg? This was clearly a Fire-type egg, too, not one from its species. Could there have been some other reason?
Still, there was no point dwelling on it. They had only met by chance, after all. If he saw it again, he could ask whether it needed help. For now, he should focus on incubating the egg.
Yan Yang looked at the egg and suddenly wanted to sing a song. A sweet song should do the Pokémon inside some good. Perhaps it could let the unborn little one feel warmth and love.
If you enjoy this book, remember to add it to your bookshelf so you do not have trouble finding it next time.
He was still young, so his singing should not sound too bad, right? With the advantage of a child's voice, children always sounded nice when they sang.
Yan Yang cleared his throat, thought for a while about a few songs from his previous life, then began to sing:
"Rattata, climbs the lampstand, steals the oil, can't get down..."
"Two Obstagoon, two Obstagoon, running fast, running fast..."
"Beneath the bridge before the door, a flock of Psyduck..."
Forgive him for only being able to sing the few nursery rhymes he still remembered. Singing anything else in his current state would have felt rather awkward.
Entei listened with great interest from the side. He had not expected Little Sun to suddenly start singing. It actually sounded quite nice. His voice was tender and fresh, much more pleasant than the chaotic chirping of birds.
Yan Yang heard Entei's voice and turned around, only to see that Entei had been watching him the entire time. His face instantly turned red. He truly had not expected Entei to be right there. It was so embarrassing. After all, his singing in the past had only been barely passable, and he honestly had no idea how he sounded now.
He had wanted to secretly sing to the Pokémon inside the egg, only for Entei to hear him. Ah, this was too embarrassing. Someone, use Fissure so he could jump in.
Seeing his child's embarrassed expression, Entei knew he had made him uncomfortable. This child was always so shy.
Entei ran away with a guilty look on his face, but he did not forget to say, "Little Sun, keep going. I didn't hear anything. Nothing at all."
Yan Yang: "..."
That only made it more embarrassing.
I'm never singing again. No matter what, I'm never singing again! Yan Yang thought angrily.
Life went on. After two weeks of effort, the Pokémon Egg finally began to stir. It seemed about to hatch.
Another day passed. Yan Yang came to the egg as usual and discovered a tiny crack in the shell. He was overjoyed. He knew that he would soon have a Pokémon of his own.
Entei stood nearby as well, witnessing the moment this Pokémon came into the world. This was also an immensely meaningful moment in a Pokémon's life.
The crack gradually widened with a creaking sound. The Pokémon inside was about to break free from the shell's confines. In the end, the eggshell could no longer hold on and split apart completely. A dark brown head poked out. Its face, ears, paws, and the tuft of fur at the end of its tail were light brown. Its nose and flame-like mane were a vivid red, while the tip of its tail ended in a tuft of fur shaped like a magatama.
It really was a Litleo. It looked to be in excellent health.
Litleo opened its eyes and saw Yan Yang standing before it. Its eyes were filled with curiosity and trust. Then, a little unsteadily, it got to its feet and climbed onto Yan Yang's foot, letting out a string of "Aaaahhh!" cries at the person above it.
It really liked the person in front of it.
A warm feeling welled up in Yan Yang's heart. He knew that he and this Litleo had already formed an inseparable bond.
Meeting Pokémon truly felt wonderful.
"Welcome, Litleo. From now on, you'll live with us," Yan Yang said cheerfully as he carefully picked up the still slightly sticky Litleo.
Litleo seemed very happy as well. It nodded eagerly, its face full of willingness.
From this day onward, their family officially welcomed a new member.
