The dishes were served.
Uncle Jiang put away his documents and turned his attention to the dining table, completely unaware of his daughter's subtle movements beneath it.
"Xiao Chen, you'll be a senior next year. What are your plans?" Uncle Jiang asked his first question.
"I might go for an internship," Chen Wen replied, his voice pausing as Jiang Qiuyi's foot reached out again. "My advisor said there will be company recommendations."
"Does your dad have any arrangements for you?" Uncle Jiang asked, taking a bite of food.
"Him? He probably wants me to join his company after graduation," Chen Wen said, shaking his head. He could feel her feet wiggling on his thigh and couldn't help but glance at Jiang Qiuyi across the table.
Jiang Qiuyi lowered her head, eating sweet and sour pork ribs, her elbows propped on the table to give her lower body more leverage to avoid Chen Wen's gaze.
"I saw your dad a few days ago," Uncle Jiang said, oblivious. "He told me you have to choose your own path, don't you have any other thoughts?"
"Not at the moment," Chen Wen answered truthfully.
If he could, he'd like to stay home and do crafts all day, but without his own source of income, it wasn't something he could justify.
"You can be a Bilibili creator with me~" Jiang Qiuyi chimed in from across the table. "I have over a million followers on Bilibili now, and with four or five videos a month, I make over ten thousand yuan."
Jiang Qiuyi's piano videos weren't particularly difficult to produce. If she were to do it full-time, she could create one episode every day or two, so her current income didn't fully reflect the true potential of a million-follower creator.
Even so, this income was enough for her to live comfortably in Hu City with plenty left over.
"Xiao Chen, are you also playing that... Bojiji Bojiji?" Aunt Lu asked curiously.
"It's Bilibili..." Jiang Qiuyi rolled her eyes.
"Yes," Chen Wen nodded. "I've already posted a few videos, just some of the crafts I usually make."
Uncle Jiang frowned beside him and said nothing further.
Aunt Lu, however, who was more open-minded about such things, continued to inquire, "Is that so? Qiuqiu downloaded it for me, but I don't really use it much. If I follow you, will I be able to see your videos?"
"Oh, I can help you with that," Jiang Qiuyi said, taking her mother's phone. She made a few taps, followed Chen Wen for her, and even opened the Elucidator's video to show her.
Aunt Lu fast-forwarded through the video and exclaimed in amazement. She patted her daughter's shoulder and said, "Xiao Chen's content is much more interesting than yours. Your music is so boring."
Jiang Qiuyi's eyes widened, and she pouted in protest. Her feet, which had been manhandling Chen Wen's thigh under the table, became even more active.
Chen Wen started to feel a little uncomfortable. He had to prop one elbow on the table to block Uncle Jiang's line of sight while adjusting his pants with his other hand.
Fortunately, Aunt Lu's attention was focused on the video, and Uncle Jiang was eating meticulously, his gaze never wandering.
Otherwise, if they had just glanced towards the edge of the table, they would have surely noticed something unusual.
Half an hour later, most of the food on the table had been eaten.
Aunt Lu started her usual nagging.
"It's hot in the summer, but you can't set the air conditioning too low, or you'll catch a cold."
"Okay~" Jiang Qiuyi replied verbally, but her feet didn't stop.
"Even after your exams, you need to practice piano every day, and do some yoga too. Your tummy is starting to show."
"It is not!" Jiang Qiuyi retorted indignantly. "I'm only around 100 pounds, how am I fat?"
"You should still practice, it's good for your health," Aunt Lu advised. "You young people don't take care of your bodies. You'll know the hardship when you're my age!"
"I know," Jiang Qiuyi pouted. She extended her other foot and lifted the hem of Chen Wen's shorts, touching his leg hair and skin.
Chen Wen instinctively flinched, then looked helplessly at Jiang Qiuyi opposite him. She was grinning and winking at him.
"Xiao Chen does very well in this regard," Aunt Lu said, bringing up someone else's child again. "Look at Xiao Chen, he goes for a run every morning, right? And look at this video, making crafts is clearly a form of exercise too."
"When he gets older, his body will definitely be better than yours."
"You need to learn from him, don't always lose control of yourself."
Jiang Qiuyi protested, "I go for morning runs too! Why don't you praise me?"
"That's all thanks to Xiao Chen," Aunt Lu glanced at her daughter, clearly knowing her personality well. "Looking at you, you don't seem like someone who's willing to get up early on her own."
Feeling underestimated by her mother, Jiang Qiuyi took all her frustration out on Chen Wen.
Her two smooth little feet danced around on Chen Wen's legs, intensifying the strange feelings within him.
Finally, Chen Wen couldn't take it anymore. He continued to prop his elbow on the table to block Uncle Jiang's view, and with his other hand, he reached under the table and grabbed Jiang Qiuyi's ankle.
Jiang Qiuyi, opposite him, visibly jumped. She retracted one foot, but her other ankle was firmly held in Chen Wen's palm.
The smooth skin in his hand felt very comfortable. On an impulse, Chen Wen used his fingers to tickle the sole of Jiang Qiuyi's foot.
Jiang Qiuyi trembled slightly and quickly took a sip of water to cover her reaction. Her gaze towards Chen Wen held a hint of pleading.
Aunt Lu was still lecturing about this and that, completely oblivious to the fun happening under the table.
Just then, Uncle Jiang's phone rang. He excused himself and went outside to take the call.
Now, Chen Wen's hands were completely free and could reach entirely under the table.
From then on, Jiang Qiuyi could only suppress her expression and endure Chen Wen's mischief on her feet. Every time he tickled the sole of her foot, she had to do something to hide her reaction.
These were all manageable.
But when Chen Wen's fingers brushed against the smooth arch of her foot, Jiang Qiuyi's face instantly changed. It became flushed, and she even let out a soft "eeh."
"What's wrong?" Aunt Lu asked, confused.
"My foot, I hit my foot on the table..." Jiang Qiuyi lowered her head and finally pulled her foot back, reaching down as if it hurt.
"Are you okay?" Aunt Lu frowned. "You're so big already, yet still so clumsy."
"It was an accident," Jiang Qiuyi complained, her eyes watering as she shot a look at Chen Wen, who remained unfazed.
That guy was getting more mischievous lately.
After the small incident, Uncle Jiang returned quickly, paid the bill, and they prepared to leave.
Riding back to Huajing Garden in the elders' car, Chen Wen accompanied Jiang Qiuyi as she said goodbye to her aunt and uncle at the entrance. She finally let out a sigh of relief.
That night, after showering and lying in bed, Jiang Qiuyi, her face flushed with embarrassment, hit Chen Wen with a pillow. "It's all your fault! Can you just touch a girl's foot whenever you want?"
"You were the one who..."
"I don't want to hear it, I don't want to hear it!"
Chen Wen chuckled, a rare sound, as he looked at the playfully unreasonable Jiang Qiuyi.
While Jiang Qiuyi was shaking her head, Chen Wen reached out again and grabbed her ankle.
"Don't!"
"Wuwu... I, I really can't..."
[Plot Summary]: My consistent view is that being straight, whether male or female, isn't innate. At least, most people who claim to be "straight" aren't truly so; they've simply had little to no experience with certain aspects of romantic relationships. Therefore, in the story, Chen Wen won't maintain an absolutely stoic, "manly" persona from beginning to end. While his personality will remain straightforward, he might gradually reveal a different side when facing Jiang Qiuyi. The extent of this change has been steadily progressing; I wonder if you can feel it.
Also, some readers worry that if the story is this sweet early on, what will the author write about later? Will the plot become repetitive or boring?
I actually considered this before starting the book and worried I wouldn't be able to write it for long. Even my editor warned me that stories where the female lead is easily won over rarely last. Of course, the editor added that for me right now, achieving good results is more important.
However, I've given thought to whether this theme can be sustained. I have some solutions in mind, and we'll see how it unfolds.
