Background / History
Kalu was an old, thin alchemist distinguished by a dark-gray robe embroidered with five white medicine bottles, the emblem of a Mortal Grade Rank Five Alchemist. Mo Yan Yu recruited him from Medicine King Valley to refine medicines for the Mo Family. 4 5
Rather than pursuing conventional alchemy, Kalu was intensely interested in poisons, a practice regarded by other alchemists as deviant. He used shackled Medicine Slaves as living test subjects, judging their bodies and survival chances with the detachment of livestock. 4 5
He took a particular interest in Shi Yan after learning that the emaciated captive possessed Essence. Kalu ordered that Shi Yan be fed well so he could endure stronger tests, then forced him to consume Gut-Severing Powder, expecting his organs to rot slowly and painfully. 4 5
Shi Yan’s unexplained survival repeatedly frustrated Kalu. He examined Shi Yan over several nights and ultimately administered a freshly refined dose to both Shi Yan and another slave, Gu Luo, to verify whether the poison had failed or Shi Yan himself was abnormal. 7
During Shi Yan’s escape amid the White Blade Jade Spider attack, Kalu immediately pursued him. He remained determined to recapture Shi Yan, both as an escaped test subject and as a possible source of valuable secrets. 8 9
According to Mo Chao Ge, Kalu had stolen a fragment of a map connected to the Heavenly Gate from his master, Mu Xun, before joining the Mo Family. The map and Kalu’s other possessions passed to Shi Yan after his death. 15
Appearance
Kalu was a gaunt, cold-eyed old man whose appearance reflected his sinister profession. He wore a crown and a dark-gray alchemist’s robe. 4
- Thin build and dry-looking fingers. 4 7
- Cold, viper-like gaze that intimidated both guards and Medicine Slaves. 4
- Dark-gray robe marked with five white medicine bottles, identifying his alchemical rank. 4 5
Personality
Kalu was cruel, clinical, and proud of his alchemy. He treated human suffering as a useful measure of poison quality and openly anticipated the slow decay caused by Gut-Severing Powder. 5 6
He was also highly vain about his expertise. When Mo Yan Yu wondered whether Shi Yan’s dose had been prepared incorrectly, Kalu reacted with immediate offense and insisted that he would not make such an error. 7
Despite his caution around Shi Yan, Kalu ultimately underestimated him in battle. He believed his Innate Realm cultivation and Dark Light Shield made Shi Yan incapable of harming him directly. 7 12

Story Role / Major Arcs
Medicine Slave Trials
Kalu oversees the caravan’s Medicine Slaves and selects Shi Yan as a more durable subject because Shi Yan possesses Essence. He has Shi Yan strengthened with food before forcing him to ingest Gut-Severing Powder. 4 5
Investigation of Shi Yan’s Survival
When Shi Yan remains healthy despite the poison, Kalu repeatedly inspects him and becomes increasingly disturbed by the discrepancy. His inability to recognize Shi Yan’s Undying Martial Soul leaves him unable to explain the failed test. 6 7
Pursuit and Death
Kalu pursues Shi Yan after the White Blade Jade Spider attack and later catches him in the forest. He repels Shi Yan’s first attack with Dark Light Shield, but Shi Yan’s Berserk-enhanced right arm destroys the shield. Shi Yan then cuts Kalu’s throat with a concealed dagger, absorbs his Essence, and takes his backpack. 8 12
Aftermath
Mo Yan Yu finds Kalu’s headless, shriveled corpse and ends the immediate pursuit out of fear that Shi Yan can kill any of her remaining companions. Kalu’s stolen map fragment and alchemical materials become a central reason for the Mo Family’s continued search for Shi Yan. 13 15
