Appearance
- True forms: Large, winged, scaled bodies with claws and tails. Nefarian’s landing produces hurricane-force winds, while Deathwing’s transformation fractures the surrounding rock 21 24.
- Humanoid forms: Dragons can assume human or elven appearances. Nefarian becomes a black-haired young man, and Alexstrasza transforms into a High Elf woman 161 822.
- Retained draconic traits: Humanoid disguises may retain slit pupils, horns, visible scales, or tails. Chromie’s scales and horns emerge when she becomes serious 169 262 822.
- Detectable identity: Transformation does not always hide a dragon’s nature. Kalecgos recognizes Nefarian as a disguised Black Dragon, and a Dalaran mage identifies Onyxia in humanoid form 163 762.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength and Flight
Dragons combine aerial mobility with considerable strength and endurance 61 812.
- Onyxia estimates that she can carry roughly ten tons into the air 61.
- Ragnaros performs tight aerial rolls, dodges lightning attacks, and destroys an incoming fireball with his tail 812.
- Deathwing survives a blast involving five hundred tons of ammonium nitrate mixed with aluminum powder, although it leaves him mutilated 25.
- Physical defenses are not absolute: Lisha shoots down Kalecgos with an Arcane Arrow, and Theramore’s Mage Tower brings down Nefarian 104 161.
Breath Weapons and Magical Affinity
Dragon breath can serve both destructive and specialized purposes 62 504.
- Black whelps can melt iron with their flame breath 146.
- Onyxia heats steel plates with Dragonfire while helping forge a bomb casing 62.
- Kaelestrasz channels Life Fire into a seal to sustain its continued existence rather than burn its surroundings 504.
- Arygos supplies arcane energy that forms a seal’s physical barrier and allows it to draw magic from the environment 504.
Dragon Awe
Draconic presence can intimidate or compel weaker dragonkind 14 653.
- Onyxia forces a broken-horned Black Dragon to kneel and makes Dragonmen abandon their orc handlers 14 653.
- General Ubis submits despite his loyalty to Deathwing 653.
- Raszageth’s ancient Dragon Awe causes Deren physical distress and is markedly different from Onyxia’s and Ragnaros’s presences 812.
Shapeshifting and Kin Recognition
Dragons use transformation to live among mortals, but the ability depends partly on maturity 161 651.
- Chromie accelerates Morwena’s growth so that she can shapeshift and escape captivity 651.
- Morwena’s transformation does not create clothing 651.
- Onyxia senses an unidentified dragon near Theramore and later recognizes an approaching Red Dragon as one of her kind 104 822.
Vulnerabilities
- Old God influence: Whispers drive the dragons attacking an Abyssal Lord into illusions and mutual combat, leaving most incapacitated 308.
- Dragon Sickness Potion: Dragonmaw kidnappers prepare it alongside tranquilizer darts. Excessive use leaves Morwena mentally impaired and largely amnesiac 111 650 651.
- Mortal traps and weapons: Ravenholdt’s corrosive trap injures Alexstrasza, while Varian severely wounds Nefarian 161 393.
- Prolonged captivity: C’Thun’s thousand-year imprisonment nearly drains Kaelestrasz, Mylune, and Arygos of their energy 503.
- Mental instability: Kalecgos improves after Ysera strikes him with Void Energy. Deren proposes this as a possible treatment for Blue Dragon madness, not an established cure 452.
Background / History
Ancient Division
Before his corruption, Neltharion experimented on the Forbidden Reach to create the Dracthyr: beings combining draconic power with mortal forms. He intended them as numerous, obedient troops against the Primal Incarnates and Primalists. The laboratory and its subjects were sealed, and conflict developed between the dragon factions 799.
Raszageth emerges after ten thousand years of imprisonment, seeking to free her imprisoned kin and avenge herself on the Aspect Dragons. She regards their acceptance of Titan power as betrayal. Deren counters that accepting that power may have protected the Proto-Dragons from the more powerful Titan Watchers, but this remains his interpretation 813 818.
War of the Shifting Sands
Kaelestrasz, Mylune, and Arygos remained inside An’qiraj to resist the insect hordes and protect the sealing of the Scarab Wall. C’Thun subsequently held them captive for a thousand years 503.
C’Thun disputes the conventional account of the war, claiming that Druids awakened his dormant insects and that several Qiraji followed them to the Caverns of Time. Deren suspects the Druids deliberately drew the dragons into the conflict; neither claim is presented as an independently established account 501.
Second War and Grim Batol
The Dragonmaw Clan controlled Alexstrasza and the Red Dragons through the Demon Soul. Rhonin’s destruction of that artifact restored the Four Dragon Kings’ power, allowing them to defeat Deathwing and force him into hiding 111 648.
The consequences persist long afterward. Alexstrasza remains troubled by her enslavement, and later expeditions encounter Red Dragons being abused in Grim Batol. Deathwing also stole and altered Red Dragon eggs, transporting some of his experimental eggs to Draenor 663 655 807.
Conduct and Society
- Gold: Dragons value glittering wealth. Onyxia persuades her followers to work by offering gold, Kalecgos trades ten freshly plucked scales for decorative glass beads, and Sinestra becomes overwhelmed by a chest of coins 14 108 687.
- Hierarchy: Draconic authority can outweigh other loyalties, as shown when Dragonmen submit to Onyxia despite serving the Dragonmaw Orcs or Deathwing 653.
- Kinship: Alexstrasza carefully heals wounded dragons because their numbers are limited and every casualty pains her. Onyxia likewise stands beside Chromie against Goldrin 309 721.
- Pride toward mortals: Sinestra initially cannot believe humans could defeat dragons, while Stellagosa struggles with the idea of humbly serving a mortal 471 737.
- Discipline: The dragons in the underground battle attack without orders. Alexstrasza contrasts their disorder with the mortal troops’ obedience shortly before Old God whispers overwhelm them 308.
- Longevity: Deren argues that long lives and innate power reduce dragons’ incentive to innovate. This is his criticism of their society, not a limitation on every dragon’s intelligence 158.
Story Role / Major Arcs
| Arc | Dragon involvement |
|---|---|
| Fertilizer enterprise | Onyxia’s followers build and operate Deren’s factory. Nefarian joins as a sulfur supplier, and Chromie later holds a small share on behalf of the Aspect Dragons 14 21 155. |
| Deathwing ambush | Onyxia, Deren, and Chromie combine explosives, time restraints, and armor-piercing rockets to defeat Deathwing. He escapes severely wounded 25 26. |
| Debate over neutrality | Alexstrasza insists that dragons do not interfere in mortal wars. Chromie challenges that policy after learning that Sapphiron serves the Lich King, while Deren questions the Aspects’ obligations to their superiors 36 79. |
| Theramore integration | Rescued Red Dragons become household servants, Nefarian becomes Aegwynn’s disciple, and Sinestra’s residence is valued as additional protection for the city 120 163 687. |
| An’qiraj restoration | The three captive dragons are freed. Their life, dream, and arcane powers combine with Chromie’s time magic to rebuild the seal 503 504. |
| Blue Dragon diplomacy | Malygos sends Stellagosa and Malygosa to cultivate relations with Deren because he is changing Azeroth’s fate. Stellagosa later asks for his views on the dragons’ future 471 778. |
| Dragon Isles expedition | Deathwing’s offspring pursue his inheritance on the Forbidden Reach. Ragnaros’s expedition encounters Raszageth, whose return introduces an openly anti-Titan dragon faction 807 812 813. |
