The one who had suddenly attacked me was the target of this mission: Captain Repas, the former militia captain of Darrowshire.
Captain Repas moved quickly. I had only just gotten to my feet when the longsword in his hand thrust at me again. I hurriedly turned aside and raised my left hand to block, but the blade sliced through my battered armor in an instant.
I hurriedly retreated, but before I could steady myself, I pushed off the ground again and charged forward. I aimed the longsword in my right hand at Captain Repas's chest and drove it in with all my strength.
But to my surprise, Captain Repas didn't dodge. He took my sword straight through the chest, then grabbed the blade so I couldn't pull it free and raised his own sword to stab me.
With no other choice, I let go and dodged backward. As soon as I retreated, the smoke and flames that had been filling the area—and the militiamen fighting the Scourge—vanished into the air like ashes. I was back in the Darrowshire I'd first found, now nothing but ruins. The flesh around Captain Repas's body slowly rotted away, until all that stood before me was a skeleton in armor.
"Where is the Silver Hand?!"
The skeleton roared. Ignoring the sword in his chest, he charged at me again. Unarmed, I could only keep dodging, waiting for a chance to retrieve my weapon.
"Where are the reinforcements?!"

"There is no hope—"
Every word Captain Repas spoke stabbed into my heart like a blade. It was a terrible feeling, much like the way the townsfolk of Southshore had looked at me.
