Background / History
Kobe is the Lakers’ star shooting guard and Li Chen’s principal on-court rival. During their early Clippers–Lakers derby, he guards Li closely, uses his fadeaway jumper as a primary weapon, and attempts to answer Li’s improbable scoring with his own offense. His frustration at missed shots and Li’s unexpected baskets contributes to the Lakers’ 102–99 loss. 12 13 15
Li first encounters a younger Kobe practicing alone at a basketball court and hires him as a passing assistant. Kobe later challenges Li to a one-on-one duel, overwhelms him 10–1 at first, and agrees to become a regular training partner after Li deliberately lets him win comfortably. 17 18
The two begin meeting frequently—often at 4 AM—for competitive one-on-one sessions. Kobe initially dominates these sessions, but Li’s unusually fast improvement forces Kobe to train harder and take their rivalry more seriously. 23 29 47
Kobe remains with the Lakers despite serious friction with Shaquille O’Neal and even having demanded a trade if O’Neal stayed. Phil Jackson persuades him to remain, while the Lakers later add Gary Payton and, eventually, Yao Ming to strengthen the team. 140 204
Personality
Kobe is intensely competitive, proud, and unwilling to concede defeat. He openly states that he wants to surpass Michael Jordan and win more championships, and he treats every practice duel with Li as something to win. 29
His pride makes him highly susceptible to Li’s provocation. Li regularly needles him about losses, statistics, and future predictions; Kobe responds by practicing harder, making bets, or trying to prove himself in games. 47 51 85 217
Despite his bluntness and thin skin, Kobe shows consideration toward others. He comforts a nervous Yao Ming before the All-Star Game, patiently signs basketballs for Harden and DeRozan, and seeks Li’s help when he is in trouble. 47 104 141
Abilities & Skills
Fadeaway Jumper
Kobe’s signature shot is a difficult fadeaway jumper, supported by strong balance and core strength.
- He repeatedly uses the fadeaway against Li, including shots released while leaning backward or falling away from contact. 13 64 152
- His shooting can suffer noticeably when fatigue accumulates, particularly after extended isolation scoring and defensive assignments. 15 223
- When his touch returns, he can take over late possessions, including consecutive three-pointers during the Lakers’ comeback against the Knicks. 15 223
Perimeter Defense
Kobe is one of the few Lakers capable of checking Li directly.
- He stays attached to Li on drives and reads shot fakes rather than biting on them easily. 13
- Li considers Kobe’s All-Star-level defense the main reason he cannot completely take over against the Lakers. 66
- Kobe knows Li’s habits from their extensive one-on-one training, though Li’s changes of pace can still wear him down. 152 223
Competitive Conditioning
Kobe trains obsessively and regularly practices at 4 AM.
- He begins rising early after Li repeatedly calls him at 4 AM, partly to maintain his image as a dedicated trainer. 23
- He practices before dawn at Staples Center and rejects any comparison to Shaquille O’Neal’s perceived complacency. 29
- In a decisive playoff game, he plays all 48 minutes and records 36 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. 117
Scoring and Playmaking
Although initially prone to pursuing individual scoring, Kobe becomes more willing to create for teammates when necessary.
- He scores 42 points in the first Lakers–Clippers matchup, though his limited assists and team play are noted as weaknesses. 15
- Against the Clippers, he records 40 points and 10 assists. 66
- In a Western Conference Finals game, he produces 40 points, 10 assists, and 8 rebounds. 217
- When his shooting is off against the Knicks, he adjusts by feeding Yao Ming rather than continuing to force shots. 222 223

Story Role / Major Arcs
Clippers–Lakers Rivalry
Kobe serves as Li’s first major NBA-level individual opponent. Their early games establish the contrast between Kobe’s polished, skill-based scoring and Li’s unpredictable, luck-driven offense. 13 15
Training Rivalry
After one-on-one practice begins, Kobe becomes both Li’s benchmark and an inadvertent source of rapid growth. Li intentionally manages Kobe’s pride to keep him returning as a sparring partner, while Kobe grows increasingly alarmed by Li’s progress. 18 29 47
Fortune-Telling Deception
Li repeatedly exploits Kobe’s growing superstition with false predictions, including warnings about the number 12 and a “Peach Blossom Calamity.” Kobe acts on these warnings despite claiming to believe only in himself, though Li later helps him collect evidence when he encounters a compromising situation. 46 105 140 141
Later Playoff and Finals Battles
As Li rises to lead the Knicks, Kobe remains a defining rival for the Lakers. Their matchups become high-profile duels between the “King of Los Angeles” and the “King of New York,” with Kobe continuing to challenge Li through scoring bursts, defense, and relentless competitiveness. 190 222 223
