Return to Konohagakure

Jiraiya returns to Konoha after a prolonged absence, initially looking for material for his writing. Anko Mitarashi and Ibiki Morino inform him that Naruto Uzumaki defeated Orochimaru during the Chunin Exams, prompting Jiraiya to treat the situation with immediate seriousness. As Minato Namikaze's former teacher, Naruto's sudden strength and identity as Minato and Kushina's son affect him personally 71 72.

Hiruzen Sarutobi asks Jiraiya to approach Naruto as a potential teacher and investigate both his sudden powers and intentions. Jiraiya recognizes Hiruzen's attempt to avoid personally confronting Naruto, but accepts because of the Great Toad Sage's prophecy and his own desire to judge Naruto for himself 72.

First contact with Naruto

Jiraiya first observes Naruto training Karin in advanced Fuinjutsu and sensory techniques. He intervenes when Gaara confronts Naruto with killing intent, dispersing the confrontation before it becomes a battle between Jinchuriki 73.

Naruto assigns Jiraiya to persuade Hoshigakure to submit and to locate Tsunade. Jiraiya finds Tsunade in Tanzaku Town, explains Naruto's rise to Hokage and his plans for reform, and uses the transformation of the Land of Waves to challenge her pessimism about change. He also presents Naruto's medical research concerning the Mysterious Peacock Method, which persuades Tsunade to investigate Hoshigakure herself 121 143 144.

Amegakure and Nagato

Jiraiya accompanies Naruto to Amegakure after learning that Nagato—his former student—is Akatsuki's true leader. Naruto reveals Yahiko's death, Konan's survival, and Nagato's use of Yahiko's corpse as the Deva Path of Pain. Jiraiya accepts the task of persuading Nagato to abandon Akatsuki's course and atone for its crimes 182.
