Ling Xiaoxiao didn't seem surprised by his question. She casually spread her hands and said, "I'm not human. I belong to the Demon Race."
Bi Fan was speechless. He couldn't tell whether she was deliberately joking to throw him off or giving him a serious answer.
He got straight to the point. "What's your background, exactly? I've never met anyone in the Demon Race who could hide their aura this well. Unless your cultivation is far above mine—but I don't think that's very likely, is it?"
Ling Xiaoxiao smiled faintly, then nimbly flipped down from the treetop. "You'll find out when the time is right. For now, just know I mean you no harm!"
"Is that so?" Bi Fan asked skeptically. "I've heard pretty girls are the best at lying."
Hearing him praise her, Ling Xiaoxiao felt a little pleased. She covered her mouth and gave a charming laugh. "Relax. I'm still counting on you to take me to the Desolate Plains. Why would I mean you any harm?"
Bi Fan raised an eyebrow. "So once we reach our destination, that might change?"
Ling Xiaoxiao couldn't help rolling her eyes. "Why do you always have to split hairs? Put it this way: there's no way we could be enemies. Feel better now?"
Bi Fan scratched his head and smiled. "Fine. Since you put it that way, I'll believe you for now. Come on, let's head to the courtyard. It's almost time to leave."
She pursed her lips and muttered under her breath. With her usual temper, she wouldn't have explained so much. But she needed his help right now, so there was nothing she could do. With the thought that one had to bow one's head beneath another's roof, she let it go.
