Chapter 10: The Grand Wedding
As Wang Yue's junior-year summer break had just begun, he heard that the impatient Xiao Nai and Weiwei had set a wedding date. All four people in Wang Yue's dorm had been invited.
But on the day of the wedding, their dorm was split into two groups: Wang Yue was a guest on the groom's side, while the eldest, Second Brother, and Fourth Brother were guests on the bride's side.
At first, Xiao Nai and Weiwei had planned to get married as soon as Weiwei graduated. Xiao Nai had even suggested holding a traditional-style wedding, and Weiwei was delighted when she heard. But when they discussed it with their families, things started developing in a completely uncontrollable direction.
The two families' elders grew more and more excited as they discussed it, and decided to follow the traditional rites to the letter: the three letters, six rites, three matchmakers, and six betrothals. To make the arrangements easier, Weiwei's family came to Kyoto early. Xiao Nai's uncle arranged a courtyard house near the school for them, and Weiwei would leave for the wedding from there.
Although they had compressed the schedule as much as possible, the process still took nearly two months. By the time Weiwei and Xiao Nai were about to get married, the new school term was almost underway.
On the wedding day, while there wasn't a ten-mile procession of dowry boxes, the festivities were still grand. Xiao Nai wore traditional wedding robes, and Bei Weiwei wore a phoenix coronet and embroidered wedding gown. All their friends came dressed in traditional clothing, too.
Word had it that quite a few tabloid reporters had caught wind of the wedding and showed up, thinking they were filming some kind of TV or movie production. A film set this open to the public was a rare thing.
After filming for a while, they suddenly realized something was off. When the wedding reached the part where the couple bowed three times and kowtowed nine times, many of the people in traditional clothing actually pulled out their phones to take pictures. How unprofessional!
So they asked the fellow in charge of filming the wedding, "The scene's been blown. Why are you still filming? Isn't the director going to do anything?"
The wedding videographer had already been a little annoyed with the family for hiring so many camera operators. But when he heard what the reporter's cameraman had said, he nearly burst out laughing.
He quickly explained, "They're getting married for real! This isn't a film or TV shoot!"
The tabloid cameramen were about to turn off their cameras, but most of the accompanying reporters stopped them. They gestured for the camera operators to keep filming, then called their superiors for instructions.
Most decided to play along and make the best of it. After all, it was excellent material for a news story.
A few particularly shrewd reporters even contacted both families after the wedding. Once they got permission, they took a copy of the wedding video with them.
As expected, the next day, Weiwei and Xiao Nai's wedding made the papers. But to everyone's surprise, that evening it even appeared on the city station's evening news.
Wang Yue had thought he'd be able to go back after attending Xiao Nai and Weiwei's wedding. The story had ended, after all. He was reluctant to leave—the brothers he'd made here, and his girlfriend, too. But the day after his hangover, he found himself still in this world.
This was ridiculous. What kind of system was this damned thing? He'd been in this world for over three years, and it hadn't shown itself once. Was this a one-way ticket, just randomly dumping people wherever? Was the system responsible for throwing all the world's slackers into TV and movie worlds?
No matter how much he complained to himself, life had to go on. Wang Yue took things as they came, learning from Xiao Nai's company. He'd even picked up Xiao Nai's habit of flaunting his relationship, and mastered it completely.
Wang Yue had become a key figure at Xiao Nai's company. Over the past three years, he'd come up with plenty of game concepts, each one a potential source of profit for the company.
Zhiyi Technology had grown from a few people in a tiny office to a company of over two hundred. It was still expanding, and developing at a rapid pace.
Beyond games, the company had also branched into network security. Wang Yue worked with the technical department every day, handling all sorts of security issues. If he could put his computer skills into practice, he was happy to take on anything.
Half a year earlier, Wang Yue had applied to transfer to the network technology department. KO was in charge there, and Wang Yue wanted to improve his hacking skills by learning from him.
One day, KO went to help Hao Mei refine a program. Wang Yue suddenly got a message from the head of the technical department, saying a group of people were attacking the company network and everyone was organizing a defense.
The other side just wouldn't let up, so Wang Yue followed their trail and tracked them down. When they realized their location had been exposed, they hurried to organize a defense. But Wang Yue was faster, and successfully traced the attack back to the organization behind it.
Wang Yue quickly sent the information he'd found to Xiao Nai, then got up and hurried to the restroom. That operation had gone on for far too long.
Just as he had squatted down, he heard the stupid system's notification sound.
"Ding! The host has learned the skill 'Hacking' and earned recognition from many hackers!"
"Ding! The host has met the return requirements of the Salted Fish Film and Television System!"
"Ding! Transmigration System starting!"
"Ding! Startup successful. Preparing to return to the original world!"
"Ding! Return successful!"
"Ding! Transmigration System cooling down!"
That was it!?
Could it at least wait until he wasn't using the toilet to cause trouble?
And what did "cooling down" mean? Would he transmigrate again once it was done cooling down? Couldn't it at least give him some idea of how long that would take?
Wang Yue was too exasperated to even complain about all that. He'd finally found a girlfriend, only to accidentally lose her again!
There was nowhere to file a complaint, anyway. This scummy system wouldn't pay him any attention. As the saying went, if you couldn't fight it, you might as well quietly enjoy it.
But just as Wang Yue had calmed down, his mood soured all over again.
He'd already been back for a while. The more-than-ten-minute edit of Love O2O on Douyin had finished playing who knew when, and only then did Wang Yue remember to get himself together and go out.
But when he suddenly stood up, the numbness in his legs hit him with a vengeance. So Wang Yue limped all the way back to the office, drawing plenty of stares along the way.
But Wang Yue didn't care at all. The "air" he'd learned from Xiao Nai only worked against him now.
Just imagine a man with an ice-cold expression limping past you. It was so absurdly dramatic that no one could help but stare.
Wang Yue returned to the office and sat in his chair. It took a good while before his disobedient legs finally came around and started working again.
He checked the time in the lower-right corner of the monitor, then thought it over. It seemed that this transmigration hadn't cost him any time at all!
That was a good setup. When his legs had first gone numb, he hadn't noticed and had assumed that his body had stayed frozen in the same position while his mind transmigrated. Thank goodness.
Wang Yue looked at the drawings open on his desktop and thought for a moment, ready to get back to work. But the computer he'd been used to suddenly felt so awkward!
Without a word, he saved the drawings and got to work. His keyboard clattered away for quite a while.
Several people near the office looked at Wang Yue in surprise. Brother Yan, the friendly senior colleague, asked, "What are you playing?"
Brother Yan was a gaming fanatic. When Plants vs. Zombies first became popular, he always had it running in the background on his computer. The manager had even called him in for a talk about it several times, but somehow, the matter was eventually dropped.
Brother Yan later told everyone, "As long as you're good at your job, the rest is all trivial." Everyone showered him with praise, but he still did whatever he liked. Even so, no one dared follow his example. Nobody was stupid enough to risk it.
Sanlun's new book would definitely have a steady update schedule.
