Lin Qile was so nervous she didn't know what to say. She wanted to deny it and escape the teacher's reprimand, but she was also afraid that if she did, Wang Yue would get angry.
Wang Yue, however, made no attempt to beat around the bush. Instead, he smiled openly and said, "Teacher, Lin Qile and I grew up together. You could say we're childhood sweethearts.
"Our grades have always been good, ever since we were little. If this were really going to affect our studies, it would have happened long ago.
"Besides, Teacher, I'm sure you know how popular Lin Qile and I are at school. We put on that little act on purpose to avoid unnecessary trouble and focus more on our studies."
Good students had privileges. Wang Yue got perfect scores in every subject, and Lin Qile's grades were excellent too, so Teacher Wu couldn't very well criticize them.
Teacher Wu had only been looking for an excuse to wriggle out of this assignment anyway. Now that Wang Yue had given him a plausible reason, he simply used it.
"Fine, then. I'll tell the Director of Student Affairs that. Just be more careful at school from now on. This is a school, after all."
Wang Yue hurriedly agreed. Whether they followed through or not, the teacher wasn't going to pursue it.
Wang Yue wasn't in the clear just yet. He'd successfully gotten past Teacher Wu, but he was going to have a harder time with Lin Qile.
After they left the office, Lin Qile asked unhappily, "A Yue, are you saying that what happened that day was all an act? That we have to keep our distance at school from now on?"
Seeing her little pout, Wang Yue couldn't help reaching out to gently pinch her cheek.
