Chapter 40: The System Always Catches You Off Guard
Zheng Wei's wedding was a bit dramatic. When it came time for the couple to bow to each other...
Suddenly, Chen Xiaozheng appeared from nowhere and shouted, "Wait!"
This caught everyone around Chen Xiaozheng completely off guard. This kind of thing was only seen in Western weddings on TV; no one had ever witnessed a bride-snatching during the traditional bowing ceremony.
However, Chen Xiaozheng's sad, low voice wasn't very clear amidst the noise of the Chinese wedding. At least, the couple getting married didn't hear him.
When the officiant called out "Couple's Bow," Zheng Wei and Xu Kaiyang had already subconsciously bowed. The officiant vaguely heard something but, seeing the situation, ignored Chen Xiaozheng and directly announced, "Escort them to the bridal chamber."
Zheng Wei and Xu Kaiyang only found out about this after they changed into their reception outfits. By then, Chen Xiaozheng had already left, leaving behind a photo album.
During the reception, Zheng Wei was surprised to find Lin Jing there as well, sitting next to Shi Jie. Seeing them arrive as a pair, Zheng Wei breathed a sigh of relief. After all, no one wanted uninvited guests causing trouble.
"Little Flying Dragon, happy newlywed life!" Lin Jing looked at Zheng Wei, who was exceptionally radiant and beautiful today, with a hint of regret. However, seeing Zheng Wei now, with both love and career flourishing, he sincerely blessed her.
Shi Jie, sitting beside him, also relaxed when she saw Lin Jing completely at ease.
Time flowed like water. In the blink of an eye, Wang Yue's younger son was already over four years old. This day, Wang Yue's family of four, on their annual trip, arrived in Yuezhou once again.
Hearing the news, Zheng Wei and Xu Kaiyang also rushed over with their own child, who was over three years old.
The two families sat together on the lawn in front of the two-story small office building. The camphor tree had already spread out like a large canopy, providing a vast area of shade.
The three children played on the lawn nearby. Little Yuan Yuan skillfully took care of the two younger boys. Although Wang Yue was chatting with everyone, his eyes were always on the three children.
Everything was so happy and joyful! Seeing Wang Yue's actions, Zheng Wei quietly nudged Ruan Wan. "Ruan Ruan, your Old Wang is doing a great job as a full-time dad."
"Mmm, after he got his doctorate, he was a bit lost for a while. Luckily, the children shifted his focus. He takes care of them even better than I do now," Ruan Wan said quietly, glancing at Wang Yue.
Wang Yue had just turned his attention back from the children and happened to overhear their conversation. Before he could explain, he heard...
"Beep, Host has learned the skill 'Full-time Dad' and has gained recognition from many friends and family!"
"Beep, Host has met the conditions for the Salted Fish Film and Television System to return!"
"Beep, Traversal System is initiating!"
"Beep, Initialization successful, preparing to return to the original world!"
"Beep, Return successful!"
"Beep, Traversal System is cooling down!"
When Wang Yue groggily opened his eyes, the office beauty beside him was still there, wiping tears while looking at her phone.
"Xiao Xu, this drama isn't that sad, is it?" Wang Yue asked in surprise. He didn't seem to know what was so particularly tear-jerking in this drama.
"Men are so heartless. Ruan Wan is dead, and you're telling me I shouldn't cry?" Xu Jing accused Wang Yue, her face streaked with tears.
Looking at Xu Jing's tear-smudged makeup, Wang Yue wondered if he should remind her. At the same time, another question arose: could it be that the "So Young" the system gave him and what Xu Jing was watching weren't the same?
"Xiao Xu, how did that Wang Yue kid bully you? Tell me, and I'll sort him out!" Brother Yan, having just finished a game of Honor of Kings, came over to join the fun.
"Brother Yan, you said Ruan Wan is dead, and Wang Yue actually asked me why I'm crying!" Xu Jing quickly sought Brother Yan's agreement.
"This, who is Ruan Wan?" If you asked Brother Yan which game was popular or what skills to use, he would tell you. But when it came to film and television dramas, he really didn't watch many.
"I'm not talking to you guys anymore!" This time, Xu Jing was genuinely angry. She thought Brother Yan was a good person!
"Little Wang, what's going on?" Brother Yan's expression was reminiscent of a confused black person.
"Oh, it's nothing. She just gets like this a few days every month!" Wang Yue said with a serious, straight face.
"I'll play another game!" Brother Yan knew Wang Yue was fooling him and went back to his gaming.
After work, Wang Yue returned to his rented room and lay on the bed, unable to stop thinking about Ruan Wan and their two children, feeling restless.
He wondered what was happening in the film and television world now. This darn system didn't explain anything. He didn't understand the mechanism of traversal – was it a parallel film and television world, or just a dream?
Accustomed to the children's playful noise, the sudden quiet made Wang Yue very uncomfortable.
He opened his computer and found "So Young." There were both movie and TV versions. He searched for pictures of Ruan Wan, but none of them looked exactly like his wife, or rather, they all bore some resemblance.
He decided to search for Zheng Wei again. Wang Yue thought it should be the TV version, as he still remembered the "dark loli" look.
However, after binge-watching for three days, finishing both the TV series and the movie, Wang Yue found that some details were from the movie version. The actors playing the characters were also a mix – some from the TV series, some from the movie.
The system was truly magical, to be able to do this. But he remembered that in both the TV and movie versions, his Ruan Wan had met an untimely end.
This made Wang Yue, who already missed his wife and children, even more agitated. He wondered if Little Yuan Yuan and Little Tuan Tuan missed their dad. Perhaps this was all just a dream!
As Wang Yue was lost in his emotions, he heard the woman from the young couple next door say, "What are you doing? The child isn't asleep yet!"
"He's asleep. Don't worry, I coaxed him to sleep after he finished his homework today!" the man's voice replied.
"The one next door isn't asleep either!" the woman insisted.
"A single dog watching dramas wouldn't hear. I've seen him glued to a TV series these past couple of days," the man said more eagerly.
"That still won't do, what if he hears!" the woman's resistance seemed to be weakening, showing signs of compromise.
"So what if he hears? We can just consider it urging him to get married on behalf of his parents!" the man's voice came through, seemingly out of breath.
This made Wang Yue even more depressed. "Urge me to get married? I have a wife, and she's prettier than yours! I have two kids, one more than you! What are you showing off about!"
Angrily, Wang Yue turned off the TV and opened Himalaya on his phone, finding a late-night ghost story host and turning the volume up.
Come on, let's hurt each other!
That night, Wang Yue put on his headphones and burrowed into his covers. He felt like he was exposed everywhere, and he didn't know when he fell asleep. The large lamp in the room stayed on all night.
The next morning, Wang Yue saw his phone was still playing and quickly turned it off. It was too scary.
When he finished washing up and went to work, he happened to run into the man from next door. Seeing his dark eye circles, it was clear he hadn't slept well either.
The man raised his arm. Wang Yue thought he was going to hit him, but the man gave him a thumbs-up instead. "Brother, you're amazing!"
"Likewise!" Wang Yue said, walking away with feigned coolness.
He heard the man mutter, "If I hadn't seen your dark circles too, I might have actually believed you!"
Wang Yue, who hadn't gone far, kicked a stone and almost twisted his back.
He heard a burst of laughter from behind him. Wang Yue quickened his pace, disappearing as fast as he could.
