Peeves did not respond to Luke right away. Instead, he began wondering how his secret hideout, hidden away for so many years, had been discovered.
No one had come to this damned place for centuries!
Then he saw the little cat behind Luke, elegantly licking its paw.
Book seemed to notice his gaze and rolled his eyes at him before continuing to lick his paw.
Peeves knew this cat.
Ever since the new students had arrived, he had often seen the cat in every corner of the castle—especially in places where girls gathered. The cat was almost always there.
Those girls would occasionally feed him little snacks. He did not even need to give them a pleasant look; simply lowering his head and eating was enough to make them smile in satisfaction. Some male Young Wizards were among those who fed him as well. At first, Peeves had assumed the cat had been left behind at the school after some student departed. Without an owner to feed him, he could only beg for food everywhere.
So Lord Peeves had thoughtfully "played" with the little cat a few times.
Who knew that this damned cat was actually little Slytherin's spy!
Damn it, he truly was the old monkey's descendant! He had actually thought of using such an inconspicuous cat as his spy. While he could not communicate directly like he could with snakes, cats were far better than snakes at making people lower their guard.
This kid was terrifying. He even schemed against Ghosts!
Luke looked at Peeves's somewhat grief-stricken expression, not quite understanding why. Although he instinctively felt Peeves had misunderstood something, judging by his reaction, it might not be a bad thing. So Luke simply went along with it.
