Background & History

Aunt Wang raised Da Fu at Miaopo Village. When Xu Yuan arrived bearing Uncle Mao's token, she refused to keep the goose and made Xu Yuan take responsibility for raising him instead 83. Aunt Wang later revealed that Da Fu hatched from a basket of eggs secretly delivered by Uncle Mao Si, while Uncle Mao possessed a bill of lading left by Xu Yuan's father concerning Da Fu 577 578.

Da Fu's provenance became the subject of an Imperial City Department investigation. Zhao Beichen uncovered records of a failed River Suppressing Beast Plan involving the modification of evil spirits and Yin-world creatures; Da Fu's unusual nature led investigators to suspect a connection. However, his exact origin remains unconfirmed 505 577 578.

Under Xu Yuan, Da Fu became a recurring asset against evil spirits. He recovered Lord Qin's intact soul for interrogation, swallowed the elusive Ding Tou Jie after it endangered Fu Jingyu, and later consumed a Great Worm over three days 105 417 473.

Appearance

Da Fu is a large white goose with a long neck, flat beak, and characteristically vacant-looking eyes that can appear arrogant or disdainful 83 516.

Personality

Da Fu is intensely food-motivated, especially by worms and worm-like evil spirits. The prospect of a Great Worm overcame any consideration of danger; he rushed it immediately and persisted even after his beak failed to crack its protective eye-shell 467. He is equally particular about food quality, regarding ordinary provisions as beneath him after hunting more satisfying prey 417.

He is proud, easily offended, and vindictive toward disrespect. When patrol captains joked about cooking him, Da Fu initially fled in fright, then repeatedly ambushed them afterward 337. He is wary of strangers and hid behind Xu Yuan when Wen Renluo praised him 500.

Da Fu also regards himself as the patriarch of a large avian household. He recruits waterfowl, presents himself as their husband, and becomes combative when Xu Yuan jokes about taking care of his “wife” if he fails to return 485 507.
