Background / History
Yu Xiaogang worked in the archives of Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy, where he discovered Tang San's registration record: Blue Silver Grass paired with Innate Full Soul Power. Concluding that such a combination indicated Twin Martial Souls, he viewed Tang San as the opportunity to prove his theories and establish himself as the continent's foremost Martial Soul scholar. Though aware that cultivating Twin Martial Souls was dangerous, he prioritized the chance to validate his research. 2
He brought Tang San to the Soul Hunting Forest and selected a Ten-Year Lone Bamboo as his first Soul Ring. Yu argued that Blue Silver Grass should follow the Control System and that the weak Soul Beast would improve Tang San's control, despite Tang San's innate potential and the much higher theoretical first-ring limit. 3 5
Tang Yuan intervened before Tang San could absorb the ring, destroyed the Lone Bamboo, and publicly challenged Yu's theories. Shui Bing'er’s thousand-year first Soul Ring and another disciple’s six-hundred-year first ring directly contradicted Yu Xiaogang’s claimed four-hundred-twenty-three-year limit. Tang San subsequently concluded that Yu Xiaogang had nearly ruined his future and severed their master-disciple relationship. 4 5 6
Yu Xiaogang repeatedly attempted to reclaim Tang San, insisting that Tang Yuan had misled him. When he confronted Tang San outside the Blue Silver King’s Mansion, he was defeated by Tang San’s first Soul Skill; Luo Sanpao was suppressed, and Yu escaped using a smoke bomb. 12
Rather than abandoning his beliefs, Yu Xiaogang became increasingly determined to reclaim Tang San as proof of his theories. Tang San’s three thousand-year Soul Rings, ten-thousand-year fourth ring, and Life and Destruction System cultivation path further shattered Yu’s expectations, but he continued to condemn the Life System as a waste of Tang San’s potential. 29 31 32
During the Soul Master Competition, Yu Xiaogang used Shrek Academy’s matches to demonstrate his tactical philosophy against Tang Yuan’s methods. His plans against the Blue Silver Team failed decisively, and Tang San publicly denounced Yu’s theories and warned that his forced Martial Soul Fusion Skill would cripple his disciples within three years. The resulting humiliation left Yu ostracized and ruined his reputation in Heaven Dou City. 102 106 108 111 112
After falling into alcoholism and disgrace, Yu sought out Tang Hao. He portrayed Tang San as Tang Yuan’s captive and argued that Tang Yuan had corrupted him into a tool for killing. Tang Hao entrusted Yu with the Clear Sky Token and ordered him to dismantle Tang Yuan’s forces and bring Tang San out. 129 130 131
Using the token’s authority, Yu Xiaogang convened the leaders of the Strength, Defense, Agility, and Breaking Clans. He directed a coordinated campaign against Tang Yuan’s influence: blockading the Blue Silver King’s Mansion, restricting schools, spreading rumors, and controlling medicine supplies. 132
Appearance
Yu Xiaogang is a middle-aged man whose increasingly unkempt appearance reflects his fall from academic authority to public disgrace.
- Initially wears a faded cloth outfit while working in Nuoding Academy’s archives. 2
- After Tang San rejects him, he is described as disheveled, unshaven, and smelling of sweat and sourness. 12
- Following his public humiliation, he appears drunk, flushed, poorly groomed, and dressed like a beggar. 129
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is intensely ambitious and bases his self-worth on his Martial Soul theories. He reacts with particular fury whenever the validity of his research is challenged, treating the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul as the foundation of his identity. 4 5
His concern for Tang San is repeatedly intertwined with self-interest. He identifies Tang San’s Twin Martial Souls as a means to validate his theories, continues pursuing him after being rejected, and regards the boy as an ideal subject whose achievements could secure Yu’s legacy. 2 29 31
He is also manipulative and opportunistic. After losing Tang San and his reputation, he exploits Tang Hao’s concern for his son, presents Tang San as a captive, and uses the Clear Sky Token to command the four major clans against Tang Yuan. 130 131 132
