Background / History
Twenty thousand years before the present story, Poseidon sought faith through coercion. He conquered islands, demanded that sea dwellers build statues and worship him, and threatened death against those who refused. His methods brought him into conflict with Zi Xiao, the Purple Blazing Sky Exterminating Dragon Martial Soul user later revered as the Overlord of the Sea. 125 126
Poseidon and Zi Xiao initially became “brothers,” but Poseidon grew increasingly jealous as Zi Xiao earned voluntary support from sea dwellers, Soul Beasts, and the Mermaid Tribe. After failing to gain followers on the continent and returning to find his own statue neglected while Zi Xiao’s was celebrated, Poseidon declared that Zi Xiao had blocked his path to godhood. 126
When Zi Xiao entered seclusion to break the Human-God Barrier, Poseidon exploited the trust placed in him. He sent the Evil Orca King, Deep Sea Demonic Whale King, and King of Demon Soul Great White Sharks away on false missions, then lured Moon Spring to the Dragon Palace with a fabricated emergency. 127
Poseidon took Moon Spring hostage and forced Zi Xiao to surrender the Ocean Godhead. After fusing with it, Poseidon became the Sea God and attacked the Dragon Palace. Zi Xiao later created the Lightning Godhead through his own power and defeated him, but Poseidon had already arranged for the Golden Lotus poison to be transferred into Zi Xiao through Moon Spring. 128 129 131 132
Though his godhead was cracked in a subsequent confrontation, Poseidon escaped. He sealed the Dragon Palace ruins beneath an island, concealed the area with divine fog, severely wounded the Deep Sea Demonic Whale King and Evil Orca King, and deceived the King of Demon Soul Great White Sharks into entering the fog. The shark was later revealed to have been killed and turned into a divine-power puppet. 133 134 117
Over the following 1,001 years, Poseidon eliminated Zi Xiao’s supporters, gathered faith to repair his damaged godhood, and claimed credit for pacifying the Great Sea. His concealed history was exposed through Moon Spring’s projections on the Heavenly Curtain, destabilizing the faith of Sea Soul Masters and Sea God Island’s guardians. 135 136
Appearance
Poseidon is depicted in both his youth and his present divine form. In his youth, he wore golden battle armor and a trident-shaped circlet set with an aqua-blue gemstone; in the God Realm, he wears blue divine armor. 121 136
- Ancient, plain facial features rather than conventionally handsome looks. 121
- Deep-blue eyes and an outwardly majestic, sacred presence. 121 136
- Golden armor and Golden Trident after fusing with the Sea Godhead. 129
- A golden halo manifested behind him upon becoming a god. 129
Personality
Poseidon presents himself as refined, gentle, and dignified when dealing with allies or potential followers, but this persona conceals intense jealousy, greed, and vindictiveness. He resented Zi Xiao not for wrongdoing, but because Zi Xiao’s voluntary support prevented Poseidon from monopolizing faith. 126 127
He treats relationships as expendable when they conflict with his ambitions. He manipulated Zi Xiao’s trust, used Moon Spring as a hostage and poison conduit, deceived the sea beast Overlords, and murdered or exploited those who knew too much. 127 128 132 134
Even after becoming a god, Poseidon remained insecure about his legitimacy. Zi Xiao fighting him evenly, then shattering his godhead, drove him into panic and retreat. 131 133
