Chapter 15: A Client Arrives
"Handing out flyers?"
Zhao Xing'er looked at the thick stack of flyers in her hands and blinked.
She had thought she was joining a Cultivation Firm to slay demons and protect the innocent, but on her first morning, Yue Wen had greeted her with a smile and assigned her the task of distributing these flyers.
The flyers bore a bold headline: "Startup Team, Great Quality, Low Prices! Yue's Cultivation Firm, Jiangcheng's Own Firm!"
It was a little embarrassing.
"Aren't I an exorcism assistant?" she asked softly.
"That's right," Yue Wen smiled. "To exorcise spirits, we first need business. Our biggest problem right now is a lack of business. If we want to grow and become strong, we need to increase our visibility. Go for it, Xiao Zhao, I have high hopes for you."
"Alright," Zhao Xing'er nodded, hugging the flyers and walking out the door.
This girl is good, Yue Wen thought. She looks quiet and gentle, and seems to have a good temper. A top evaluation from a leader to an employee.
Easy to boss around.
Originally, he would have had to do all this menial work himself. Now that he had an assistant, he could confidently leave all the flyer distribution to Zhao Xing'er, saving himself a lot of time.
He would check on Zhao Xing'er's progress later. If she proved reliable, he planned to go out. He needed to get that half of the Black Gold Skull appraised and inquire about the materials needed to cultivate the Chaos Dragon Gang.
Meanwhile, Zhao Xing'er, having left the Firm, arrived at a street corner not far away, a place with more foot traffic.
She stood there holding the flyers, clearly a little reluctant.
Although she was too embarrassed to stop people, she was naturally beautiful and attracted the attention of passersby. Many people, without her needing to approach them, came over to talk to her, wanting to see what the flyers said.
After some time of people taking flyers, a car roared up and a blue sports car screeched to a halt in front of her.
The window rolled down, and a young man with dyed red hair leaned out, smiling at her. "Hey beautiful, I think you're really pretty. Can I get your contact info?"
"No, thank you," Zhao Xing'er replied calmly.
"Are you handing out flyers?" the red-haired man looked at her more closely. "What kind of business is this?"
"A Cultivation Firm," Zhao Xing'er answered.
"Haha, perfect then," the red-haired man took out his phone. "I'll add your contact info. If I have any business later, I'll look for you."
"You can just add the one on here," Zhao Xing'er handed him a flyer. "It's our boss's number."
"Oh, but I wanted your personal number," the red-haired man said slyly.
"I really don't need to," Zhao Xing'er insisted.
The red-haired man's expression suddenly turned serious. "Are you not giving me face? Do you know who I am..."
Zhao Xing'er looked back at him expressionlessly. "You should go get your car fixed first. We can talk about anything after that."
"Get my car fixed?" the red-haired man blinked. "I just got this new car, what needs fixing?"
"Hmph!" Before he could finish speaking, Zhao Xing'er's eyebrows suddenly narrowed, her eyes flashed red, her features twisted for a moment. She lunged forward, twisting her waist and pulling her right shoulder back. Gathering her strength, she threw a punch!
BOOM--
A burst of red energy erupted from her fist, instantly engulfing the rear half of the sports car, accompanied by a thunderous explosion.
The red-haired man felt a chill at the back of his head. His eyes twitched, and when he looked up at the rearview mirror, he saw the crosswalk on the ground.
This single punch had completely obliterated the back half of his car!
Only the front two seats remained. Sports car seats were already low, and he now felt like he was sitting on a sofa with a steering wheel.
"You... you... you..." he looked at Zhao Xing'er in terror, unable to form a coherent sentence.
He had seen her handing out flyers on the street, and she looked so gentle and weak, seemingly easy to handle.
He never expected this woman to be so incredibly strong!
She had essentially turned his sports car into a modified chaise lounge.
"Didn't you want to get your car fixed?" Zhao Xing'er asked softly, turning her gaze back to him. "Then wait until you're back from the hospital."
"Mommy--"
The red-haired man started crying in fear, grabbed the steering wheel, and ran off, fleeing down the road as fast as possible, even faster than when he was driving.
Watching the red-haired man disappear into the distance, Zhao Xing'er let out a deep sigh and calmed herself. She took out her phone and sent a message: "Bad news, bestie, I couldn't hold back again and destroyed a car."
"Haha, what's a car? Don't worry about it. How much was it? I'll reimburse you," the other person replied quickly.
"Is it convenient?" Zhao Xing'er asked, looking at the wreckage. "It should be a new model, a Blue Tiger Drive. Must have cost over a million."
The other person: "?"
Yue Wen had been in the Firm for a while and was about to check on Zhao Xing'er's situation outside and then head out for his own errands.
Just as he stood up, Zhao Xing'er walked in, pulling a dejected-looking middle-aged man behind her. "Boss, we have a customer."
"Oh?" Yue Wen's eyes lit up. "So soon?"
Zhao Xing'er smiled gently. "This uncle said he has something he wants to consult about, so I brought him right back."
"Please, have a seat," Yue Wen quickly said, ushering him in.
The man who entered was around forty years old, slightly gaunt, wearing a gray light jacket. His right sleeve was empty; he was disabled. He had a stubble on his face, dark circles under his eyes, and his gaze was filled with anxiety.
"Um..." The man leaned in as he sat down, and his first question was, "I heard from this young lady that your fees are very low, right?"
"That's right," Yue Wen immediately nodded. "Our Firm's main focus is affordability and serving the people."
"I... I really can't afford much. I recently became disabled unexpectedly and lost my job..." The man's voice was low. "Would five hundred yuan per case be okay?"
"It's fine," Yue Wen agreed without hesitation. "Helping you solve your problem is the most important thing. Tell me what happened first?"
Zhao Xing'er listened from the side, her gaze towards Yue Wen shifting slightly.
Five hundred yuan per case, split fifty-fifty, meant two hundred and fifty each. That wasn't even enough for gas money if they had to travel far, let alone hire a cultivator.
Yue Wen's willingness to agree meant he wasn't concerned about the money.
The only reason could be that he possessed a chivalrous spirit, a rare quality in this era.
Otherwise, would he have a hobby of hunting Evil Spirits?
At this moment, Yue Wen's humanity shone a little in her heart.
"My son is missing," the man began to explain. "He's been acting strange these past few days, often locking himself in his room and refusing to come out, saying he was playing games with some friends. I've been busy lately and didn't pay much attention at first. But this morning, when I called him for dinner, he didn't respond. I went into his room and found he was gone."
"Was there anything unusual in the room?" Yue Wen asked.
"No, he was fine the night before, and just disappeared this morning. All the doors and windows at home were fine. I don't know what happened..." He then lowered his head, blaming himself. "I haven't been paying enough attention to him."
"Uncle, you don't need to be sad. We'll do our best to help you find him," Zhao Xing'er said comfortingly.
"If it's an Evil Spirit that dared to sneak into a home to steal a child, that's quite bold," Yue Wen mused. "I've rarely heard of such a thing."
"Actually... it might not be an Evil Spirit," the man paused, then continued. "I have a suspect."
"Oh?" Yue Wen looked at him. "Who?"
"It's my factory boss," the man said, his expression turning angry. "A while ago, while I was working at the factory, my arm was severed due to a machine malfunction. If I had enough for surgery, I could have hired a cultivator to reattach it, but he kept delaying paying my compensation."
"I don't dare to sue him because he has ties to the underworld and has used shady methods to deal with his competitors before. I thought if I pleaded with him more, he'd pay me the compensation normally. Today was supposed to be our final negotiation day, and my son disappeared last night."
"I suspect he might have hired someone to use some trick to abduct my son and blackmail me."
"That's possible," Yue Wen nodded.
Evil Spirits that dared to break into homes and steal children within the city were extremely rare.
In cities, demons hid in the shadows, afraid of being discovered, and Nightmares had their own patterns of behavior and wouldn't act randomly.
Although their methods were undetectable to mortals, once a disappearance was attributed to an Evil Spirit, the Supervision Bureau would intervene, and the situation would become much more serious. Regardless of whether the child could be recovered, that Evil Spirit would definitely have to be eliminated.
Therefore, cases like this were more likely to be man-made.
"We're scheduled to negotiate tonight. Could you come with me and protect me? If my son is truly in his hands, I'll even forgo the compensation. Just get my child back," the man said.
"Of course," Zhao Xing'er said gently. "Don't worry, if the other party kidnapped your son to threaten you, they probably won't harm him."
"Who knows what they're capable of?" the man frowned. "These bosses, not one of them is a good person!"
Zhao Xing'er nodded. "That's true."
Yue Wen: "?"
Good morning.
