As the leader of the Wolf Pack, the Wolf King's physical condition was superior to that of ordinary wolves. The advancement in tier made the Wolf King different from common wolves, enabling it to cast Spells and possess the Leadership Technique to command the Wolf Pack.
Besides these, a higher tier also brought the Wolf King wisdom unlike other beasts.
When facing a strong enemy, the Wolf King, who should have been at the forefront of the Wolf Pack with the best physical condition, found that after gaining wisdom, it was hard to say how much courage remained, replaced instead by a deep fear of death.
Perhaps it was precisely because of this characteristic that the Wolf King was so sensitive to danger. When discovering prey, the Wolf King could charge at the front, but in a real life-or-death battle, the Wolf King chose to command its subordinate wolves to Charge while it stayed in the rear to cast Magic.
Unwilling to be injured, unwilling to charge into battle, only wanting to fight with Leadership Technique and Magic, the Wolf King's actions made Rhode sigh, "This is human nature!"
Precisely because of this, the Wolf Pack ultimately failed. If the Wolf King had led its subordinates charging at the front of the passage with its physical condition, combined with its Magic, Rhode would not have been able to defeat the wolf pack so easily.
At this moment, the Wolf King, who was dodging the attacks of the Ghouls, was nothing more than a stray dog in Rhode's eyes, despite its still massive size.
The Wolf King was solely focused on escaping, completely ignoring the Ghouls' attacks, and simply charged towards the gaps between them. However, as the Ghouls had completely surrounded it, the Wolf King couldn't break through the numerous Ghouls for the moment.
Rhode seized an opportunity and used Mental Mark to control a Ghoul, which lunged at one of the Wolf King's legs. The Wolf King couldn't dodge in time, and one of its hind legs was caught squarely.
The Wolf King immediately turned its head and bit down on the Ghoul's rotting arm, then twisted its body violently, tearing off a large chunk of flesh.
Only half of the Ghoul's arm's outer skin remained connected, and exposed bone could even be seen from the side.
Even so, the Ghoul did not let go. Instead, it took advantage of this opportunity to grab the Wolf King's leg with its other hand. The characteristics of Undead Creatures were maximized.
The Ghoul was able to grab the Wolf King's leg like this as a result of Rhode's control. If Rhode hadn't controlled the Ghoul, it would have only attacked the Wolf King with its claws based on instinct, rather than holding on so tightly.
While the Wolf King was solely focused on dodging, it was difficult for the Ghouls to inflict significant damage, but grabbing it was different.
It's often like this; the combat of Undead Creatures relies entirely on instinct. Even with tenacious Constitution, they don't utilize it. Undead Creatures need to be controlled by a Necromancer to reach their full potential.
The Wolf King, caught off guard by the Ghoul's grab, found its retaliatory bite ineffective. Before the Wolf King could take further action, the surrounding Ghouls swarmed in.
Under Rhode's control, the Ghouls lunged at the Wolf King, attempting to grab it.
With one leg caught, the Wolf King's movement was impaired. Unable to dodge, it could only be grabbed by the surrounding Ghouls. Struggling, the Wolf King lost its balance and fell to the ground.
Once down, the Ghouls pressed down on the Wolf King's body with their hands. Due to the large number of Ghouls, no matter how much the Wolf King struggled, it couldn't break free. With the combined force of the Ghouls, the Wolf King was pinned to the ground.
If the Ghouls were replaced by a group of people, even with Rhode's command, they wouldn't have coordinated so well, nor would they have overcome the fear brought by their biological instincts to directly pin the Wolf King to the ground with their hands.
Only a Necromancer, when controlling Undead Creatures, could execute such tactics.
The Wolf King still tried to struggle, but some Ghouls held its legs while others pressed down on it. Its struggles were merely futile.
Suddenly, the pressure on the Wolf King lessened. Just as it tried to roll over with force, it saw a cold glint descend from above. Immediately, it felt a sharp pain in its body, and then nothing more...
"You have obtained the Speed Achievement [Undead Controller]."
"[Undead Controller]: Control Undead Creatures to kill a normal creature. Base reward: Control Spirit +1."
"..."
"Glorious victory! In this battle, you have gained a total of 210 Experience Points!"
Rhode sheathed his sword. With the Wolf King dead, he had the surrounding Ghouls retract their hands pinning it down.
Rhode looked at the system log. In this battle against the wolf pack, he had gained a total of 210 Experience Points.
Of these 210 Experience Points, only 60 came from the Wolf King. Ordinary wolves provided the same Experience Points as Ghouls, at 15 points each.
Rhode recalled that killing the apprentice Alot had earned him a full 400 Experience Points. Killing this pack of wolves yielded only half of that.
This made Rhode sigh, realizing that killing Heroes indeed yielded more Experience Points. Compared to creatures of the same tier, Heroes provided approximately 5 times the Experience Points, and the stronger the Hero, the greater the multiplier.
This was also to encourage players to challenge powerful Heroes.
Among creatures of the same tier, spellcasters provided the most Experience Points. Combined with being a Hero, this explained why Hero Alot could provide 400 Experience Points.
"Consumed 200 Experience Points, remaining Experience Points 145. Class Level increased to Tier 2 Swordsman Level 3..."
"Obtained 1 Free Attribute Point, obtained 1 Skill Point..."
After leveling up, and due to his current lack of Mana, Rhode allocated the obtained 1 Free Attribute Point to Knowledge.
While reviewing the system log, Rhode also saw the notification for obtaining the achievement.
Rhode looked at his character attributes. Behind the original five attributes, a new one named Control Spirit had appeared, currently at 1 point.
Control Spirit was an exclusive attribute for Necromancers. It could be obtained through Meditation or through a series of Necromancer achievements.
Relying solely on Meditation, unless performing deep meditation, it was difficult to gain Control Spirit. Ordinary players more commonly increased Control Spirit by obtaining Necromancer achievements.
Currently, Rhode controlled 10 Ghouls. Each Ghoul's Mental Mark occupied 0.15 of the Spirit attribute. Even if some Ghouls had broken legs or sustained severe injuries, the occupied Spirit attribute did not decrease.
After obtaining 1 point of Control Spirit, the previously occupied 1 point of Spirit attribute was returned.
After killing the wolf pack, Rhode did not rest. Instead, he controlled the surrounding Ghouls to move the wolf corpses to the hall where bodies were previously displayed, placing them alongside the Ghouls that had not activated Soul Fire.
Rhode inspected the wolf corpses on the ground. Most of them had significant wounds, inflicted by his sword, with a few being decapitated.
The decapitated wolf corpses, lacking the part that generated Soul Fire, could not be transformed into Undead Creatures.
Among the wolf corpses scattered on the ground, the Wolf King had the fewest wounds, with only one fatal injury. Rhode had deliberately avoided causing excessive damage, instead piercing its heart with a single sword strike.
Rhode tried switching his title to [Necromancer], gaining a +1 to Soul Summoning. He then used Soul Summoning on a wolf corpse on the ground. The system prompt indicated it would cost 30 Mana to immediately transform it into an Undead Creature. Rhode's Mana was clearly insufficient.
Looking at the wolf corpses littering the ground, Rhode decided to let them continue transforming here. With the Death Energy provided by the Crypt, Rhode could save Mana on reshaping their bodies.
Now, Rhode only needed to wait for the Crypt to finish reshaping them.
Inside the Crypt, a bloody smell permeated the air. The original Death Energy seemed to have been stimulated, becoming even more potent. The Death Energy nourished the wolf corpses laid out on the ground; Rhode wasn't sure if this was good or bad...
Rhode exited the Crypt. After such a battle, it was still deep into the night outside.
Due to the bloody smell filling the Crypt, as well as some other reasons, Rhode chose not to Meditate inside. Instead, he returned to the place where he had originally Meditated and sat down cross-legged.
The moonlight was still calm. If not for the half-devoured Ghouls scattered across the ground, no one would have known that a pack of wolves had been here.
