Carlos had always been good at acting.
The gatekeeper heard him out and wore an expression that said he'd expected as much. Then he let out a heavy sigh, the wrinkles on his face deepening. "Sigh... Yes, I know about that. Such a terrible tragedy. Those three were all good kids."
He shook his head and lowered his voice. "To be honest, some investigator gentlemen and ladies came by yesterday because of this. They looked around during the day and kept watch at night, too, but... they all said they hadn't spotted the monster. It's a slippery thing!"
This was just as Carlos had expected.
The deduction players in the first phase were either too weak to risk dealing with a monster prowling around a university at night, or, like Carlos, capable but occupied with higher-priority goals. They hadn't gotten around to investigating this place, so the monster had remained a mystery, without leaving a single trace.
"We understand this won't be easy, but it's our duty to do what we can." Carlos spoke calmly. His courteous manner still carried the air of superiority that came with being an investigator. He didn't need to ask for anything; he simply gave an order. "Sir, we're going in to take a look around and familiarize ourselves with the area."
"Of course, of course. Please, go right in." The gatekeeper hurriedly stepped aside, then kindly pointed out the way. "The incident seems to have happened near the small grove and old warehouse behind the main building. People from the church came to look before, and they said the aura was strongest there. You can check it out, but please be careful."
