"A sage can be wrong, but Mahavairocana Buddha is not wrong."
"What about Guanyin Bodhisattva? Guanyin Bodhisattva was the one who led you on the path of the Journey to the West back then, and where is he now?"
"Guanyin Bodhisattva was the one who was wrong."
"Guanyin Bodhisattva only wanted to save the common people. What did he do wrong?"
"Guanyin Bodhisattva saved the people of one lifetime, while Mahavairocana Buddha saves the people of ten thousand lifetimes. It does not matter who is right or who is wrong; it is simply that Guanyin Bodhisattva's vision is too narrow."
Hearing this, An Yang suddenly found it somewhat ironic. "This hardly sounds like something a neutral person would say."
Victorious Fighting Buddha replied, "My attainment in Buddhist dharma is neither as profound as Guanyin Bodhisattva's nor as great as the Venerable Mahavairocana Buddha's, so I can only remain neutral and let them argue it out. Whichever side is right, I act for the common people according to that side's ideas. As it stands now, Guanyin Bodhisattva has fallen behind."
"Then what is your standard for judging victory and defeat?"
"The Buddhist masses, the monastic assembly, the believers..."
The two of them talked back and forth, yet it was clear that neither could convince the other.
In truth, this was not a matter of eloquence being strong or weak, nor of learning being shallow or deep, but rather that the two of them were completely separated by a world—one could not shuttle out, and the other could not cross over. Their completely different understandings of everything around them in the world made it impossible for either to comprehend the other's ideology.
