Yu Xiaogang was born to Yu Yuanzhen of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, but awakened only half a rank of Innate Soul Power. Though the clan devoted substantial resources to him, he was trapped at Level 29 for many years, leaving him deeply resentful of more naturally gifted Soul Masters. 128

He developed a reputation as a Theory Master despite his weak cultivation. His expertise includes Soul Beast classification, Soul Ring ages, and cultivation theory; he later used this knowledge to instruct Tang San. 152 153

Yu Xiaogang formerly had a romantic attachment to Bibi Dong. By the time of the Saint Son ceremony, Bibi Dong had rejected her former obsession with him and regarded him with hostility; when he publicly demanded an explanation for Qian Renxue's existence, she sent him flying with a blast of Soul Power. 129 130

Yu Xiaogang is intensely ambitious and sensitive about his low innate talent.
