Background / History

Sun Moon Continent era

The Sun Moon Empire was one of Sun Moon Continent's two great empires, opposing the Moonflower Empire in recurring small wars every five years and major wars every ten. Its royal line possessed two inherited Martial Souls: the Sun and the rare, more difficult-to-awaken Purple Blazing Heaven Dragon. 1 3

The continent's high-level Soul Master population was repeatedly weakened by Beast Tides from the Evil Demon Forest, which occurred every hundred years and claimed many powerful Soul Masters. This contributed to the empire's reliance on Soul Tools and medicinal pills; while pills accelerated early cultivation, excessive use created later bottlenecks. 2 3

Xu Yunxiao's rise transformed the empire's strength over roughly three decades. A leading talent in both cultivation and Soul Tool development, he drove the Moonflower Empire to the edge of collapse and led the final campaign against Moon Yao City. 3 14

Unification of Sun Moon Continent

The Sun Moon Empire destroyed the Moonflower Empire and unified Sun Moon Continent roughly a year and a half before the events of Chapter 15. The former emperor died soon after hearing the news; Xu Yunxiao subsequently ascended the throne, renamed the capital Mingdu, invested Xu Tianyang as Crown Prince, and made Mu Mengyu Empress. 15

Following unification, the empire integrated the former Moonflower territories and resources, entering a period of rapid development across multiple fields. 21 28

Contact with Douluo Continent

After discovering Douluo Continent, the empire began gathering intelligence and concluded that its new neighbor possessed powerful Soul Masters but had largely lost Soul Tool technology. Xu Tianyang and the imperial court viewed Douluo Continent's internal divisions as a strategic advantage, while treating Spirit Hall as the principal force requiring caution. 27

The empire publicly revealed Sun Moon Continent's existence through the Myriad Treasures Pavilion, ending any possibility of remaining hidden. It then pursued diplomacy backed by deterrence, including an agreement with Heaven Dou that secured a border city, a copy of Heaven Dou's book collection, and the Vast Sea Cosmic Shroud for research. 36 41

War with Star Luo

The Sun Moon Empire declared war on the Star Luo Empire after citing the disappearance of personnel along the Mingdou Mountain Range border. Its military leadership had also sought a major war to test new Soul Tools and establish the empire's authority. 56 57

At the Battle of Mingdou Mountain Range, its reconnaissance network, Soul Tool Regiments, artillery positions, and coordinated firepower overwhelmed Star Luo forces. The empire later bypassed the main front, attacked Star Luo City, and used a Level Nine Fixed Soul Cannon Shell to destroy two-thirds of the Star Luo Imperial Palace. 58 59 67 69

Dai Tianfeng surrendered to prevent further bombardment. The resulting terms granted the Sun Moon Empire territory within a thousand li of the Mingdou Mountain Range, severing Star Luo's western defense line. Mingdou City was subsequently established as a resource-extraction center and future bridgehead. 69 72

Continental unification

When the Spirit Hall Empire defeated Star Luo, the Sun Moon Empire moved before Spirit Hall could consolidate the former Douluo Continent. Its plan paired large conventional forces with elite Soul Tool troops advancing directly on Spirit City, seeking to limit the war's destruction and preserve the continent's resources. 253 254

Bibi Dong's death ended organized resistance. The Sun Moon Empire absorbed the former Douluo Continent within three months, using a divide-and-conquer policy that elevated new beneficiaries to restrain former power holders. 257

Xu Tianyang later succeeded Xu Yunxiao as Emperor, receiving the Sun Moon Heaven Suppressing Sword and Imperial Seal during a continent-wide coronation ceremony in Mingdu. 263
