Intertwined Rivers

His consciousness drifted.

Lin Yanqing felt as though he had become a strand of pure energy, flowing through a strange river woven from cold silver light and warm blue radiance. The river had no physical form; it consisted of countless minute pulses of magic, shattered fragments of emotion, and hazy glimmers of thought. He could clearly "hear" another "presence" nearby—the sensation was cold and obscure, like an undercurrent beneath the riverbed, carrying intense rejection and scrutiny. It was Severus Snape.

The power of the ritual tugged at them, forcing these two rivers of entirely different natures to draw close, touch, and tentatively merge.

Cold collided with warmth; obscurity met clarity.

A violent sense of rejection struck at once, as if two magnets with the same poles had been forcibly pressed together. The river on Snape's side suddenly surged with fierce waves, filled with unwilling fury and defensive sharpness. Lin Yanqing could "feel" the nearly tangible warning rising from the depths of the other man's consciousness: Stay away!

Yet the power of the formation was like an invisible embankment, restraining and guiding them. The glow of the Star Gold Powder stabilized the magical channel, the Moonlight Moss harmonized their energy attributes, and the Tranquil Spring Water acted as a buffer, calming their fiercest clashes.

The process was slow and painful, especially for Snape. Lin Yanqing could continuously "sense" his struggle—a discomfort and panic born of having his soul's shell forcibly pried open. He was like a pinned sea urchin, desperately curling inward and raising every spine.

Time lost all meaning within the realm of consciousness.

After an unknown amount of time, following a violent wave of resistance from the depths of Snape's mind, the power of the Tranquil Spring Water was fully awakened. A profoundly tranquil energy, like the tentacles of a jellyfish, gently wrapped around the cores of their fiercely opposing consciousnesses.

Under the reconciliation of that absolute stillness, cold resistance and gentle persistence finally found an exceedingly fragile yet genuine point of balance.

The rejection did not disappear completely, but its needle-sharp hostility weakened. The two rivers no longer tried to tear each other apart. Instead, they formed a strange parallel state, their energies beginning the barest, controlled exchange and circulation at an extremely slow, cautious pace.

Lin Yanqing felt that the soul bond between himself and Snape, once stiff and bristling with barbs, had been soaked and smoothed by a gentle force, becoming... somewhat more pliant. It still existed and remained firm, but it no longer felt like an iron wire cutting into flesh. Instead, it was more like a leather strap that was awkward, yet had already grown accustomed to being there.

The formation's glow gradually faded.

Lin Yanqing's consciousness was gently "pushed" back into reality. He abruptly opened his eyes and found himself still standing at the Xun position of the magic circle. His body felt weak, and his forehead was covered in fine sweat. Snape was in much the same state across from him, supporting himself with one hand against the floor as he gasped violently. His face was frighteningly pale, and his black hair clung to his temples with sweat. He looked more disheveled than Lin Yanqing had ever seen him.

On the floor, the Star Gold Powder had lost its luster, the Moonlight Moss had turned to ash, and the Tranquil Spring Water in the silver bottle had dried up. The ritual was complete.

The cramped archive room was deathly silent, filled only with their heavy breathing.

Snape abruptly raised his head and looked at Lin Yanqing. His gaze no longer held the desperate resolve from before the ritual. Instead, it was full of uncertainty and a trace of... bewilderment. He seemed to be urgently examining himself, feeling for the changes within his body and the bond connecting them.

Lin Yanqing was doing the same. He tried to circulate his magic and found it flowing a little more smoothly than before. The faint sluggishness from the contract, always present before, had eased. More importantly, he could now "feel" Snape's emotions more clearly—not as vague fluctuations, but as a more distinct underlying tone. Right now, for example, he could clearly sense the other man's intense confusion, as well as a... loss at no longer having a clear target for his hostility.

Snape had clearly noticed the change as well. He could more clearly sense the calm yet slightly weary emotions coming from Lin Yanqing. This direct "reading of emotions" made him intensely uncomfortable, and familiar irritation instantly surged in his black eyes.

"You..." He had just begun to say something, perhaps intending to scold or warn him out of habit, but the words caught in his throat. Because he realized that the instant he felt intense anger, Lin Yanqing seemed to catch it immediately and send, through that newly pliant bond, an exceedingly faint but impossible-to-ignore... soothing intent.

The sensation made Snape clamp his mouth shut as if he had been burned, his expression turning even uglier. He loathed this uncontrolled leakage of emotion, and loathed even more the other man's calm that seemed to see through everything—perhaps hypocritical calm, in his eyes.

He struggled to his feet, no longer looking at Lin Yanqing, and began quickly and silently clearing the scene. He erased every trace of the ritual completely, his movements returning to their usual precision and efficiency, as if he wished to reassert his sense of control through the act.

Lin Yanqing did not help. He knew that any action he took now might be interpreted as an offense. He merely watched quietly and regulated his breathing.

Once the last trace had been cleared away, Snape straightened up with his back to Lin Yanqing. His voice returned to its usual chill, but beneath that coldness seemed to lurk a barely perceptible fatigue and... uncertainty.

"The contract's interference... should have weakened," he stated, as if delivering an experimental conclusion. "But this channel... has become clearer."

After saying that, he did not linger. He pulled open the door and quickly vanished into the darkness of the corridor outside, his footsteps soon fading away.

Lin Yanqing remained alone in the old archive room, which was once again dusty and looked as though no one had ever entered it. He could feel Snape's emotions at the other end of the soul bond being forcibly suppressed, covered once more beneath a thick layer of ice. Yet the confused undercurrent beneath that ice could not be fully stilled.

He lowered his head and looked at his hands, circulating his magic once more to confirm that the sluggishness had eased.

"Phase Mission [Stabilize the Contract] complete! (★ ω ★) Congratulations, Host! Soul bond stability increased to 65%! Magical resonance interference reduced! New passive effect: [Enhanced Emotional Perception]!"

The system's cheerful notification sounded.

The ritual had succeeded, but it was not a permanent solution. It had not dissolved the contract; it had "optimized" it. The interference had lessened, but the connection had deepened. They had gained a measure of peace, yet become entangled even further.

For Severus Snape, this meant losing a clearly defined "enemy"—the unstable contract itself—while being forced to face a far more difficult-to-define "coexistent."

Lin Yanqing knew that the days ahead might no longer hold the danger of direct magical backlash, but dealing with Snape's increasingly sensitive and unpredictable emotions would become a new, perhaps even more difficult challenge.

He walked out of the archive room and gently closed the door. Hogwarts remained quiet at night, but for him and the boy hiding in the Slytherin dungeon, something had changed at its very root.
