Background / History
Astral origins and the Wasteland
Shalti was born in the cold reaches of the firmament. Her people developed the ability to store heat and maintain their body temperature in that environment 296. A later dream depicts her arrival in this world as a falling star whose impact brought fire, storms, and frightened creatures; she associates those memories with being an elf who brought disaster and chaos 499.
She spent several hundred years in the Wasteland. There, she guided Merlin’s study of Wild Magic, while he shared his own knowledge with her, including the requirements for ships capable of sailing the Astral Sea 265 319.
Merlin hoped she would become the source of the Obelisk Tower, supplying Source Essence to stabilize the continent. Shalti refused to sacrifice her freedom. House Hal respected that decision and concealed it because they feared public condemnation would harm her; her instruction had nevertheless enabled Merlin to understand Wild Magic 265.
Search for a way home
After Merlin left to sacrifice himself, Shalti also left the Wasteland. For roughly two centuries, she searched for lost books of every kind, especially information about magic ships and Create Magic Rudder, a fifth-level transmutation spell required to control and power such vessels 319 452.
She considers herself part of the Escape Faction: rather than wait for the Phlogiston Sea to consume the world, she hopes to travel through the Astral Realm to somewhere untouched by it 320.
The Minions of the Ebony Forest
Shalti spent ten years adventuring with Black Snake, Markwen, Gravel, and Falto. Their group helped stop Ebony Forest’s plague by killing mutated creatures and those responsible for the disaster. She does not treat their lifesaving intentions as erasing the slaughter they committed 319.
Their expedition into the Great Desert’s ruins ended in catastrophe. Exhausted by traps and aberrations, they began retreating under Black Snake’s direction but encountered a Beholder after their supplies and spell slots were depleted. Shalti later admits that she saw no option except trusting chaos to give them a chance of survival 499. Markwen’s leg was disintegrated, Falto died, and the survivors left his body behind 452 497.
After losing her original spellcasting, Shalti followed Markwen to Ebony Forest to learn Ranger skills she could rely on for survival 294 319.
Appearance
Shalti is a tall, pale-skinned elf with a sculpted face and an outwardly composed expression 132 286.
- Hair: Silver-white, compared to snow; two locks frame her cheeks 146 286.
- Eyes: Emerald green flecked with gold 286.
- Ears: Long and pointed; blushes on her ears sometimes reveal emotions her face conceals 286 494.
- Build: Tall and shapely, with long legs; she is taller than Tang Qi 359 494.
- Usual clothing: A hooded cloak, fitted hunting clothes, leather bodice, fingerless gloves, and knee-high boots 286 296 359 494.
- Drow disguise: Uses Beauty Powder with Shadowcap Mushroom coloring to imitate Drow skin while infiltrating Lightless City 441.
Personality
Shalti’s apparent indifference is not simple coldness. She can be talkative when explaining something, but usually speaks without much emotional inflection. She finds deliberately stirring up emotion troublesome and even delivers questions as statements 319.
Curiosity is her strongest visible motivation. She asks detailed questions about Tang Qi’s life, magic, writing, and influence over others. Her interests can overcome her reluctance to get involved: information about a Conch Ship and a possible route home persuades her to help attract the Pixies 288 293 316 358.
She strongly values personal choice. She refused to become a sacrificial resource for the world and believes others must decide for themselves whether a bargain is worthwhile—and bear its consequences 265 299. Her decisions also reflect personal attachments rather than rigid allegiance: she helps Ailivy escape because she considers her a good person, not because she necessarily endorses the surrounding plan 326.
Her calm expression conceals considerable vulnerability. She fears losing people she cares about and worries that revealing her past will make Tang Qi hate her. Her immense accumulated memories are described as a mental library, but that store of experience does not make it easy for her to identify or express her feelings 452 494 499.
She is poor at acting, lying, and negotiation. In her former party, Black Snake and Falto handled social matters while she supplied firepower; traveling with Tang Qi makes her recognize how much she still relies on others for such decisions 310 407.
Abilities & Skills
Wild Magic and Source Essence
Shalti formerly controlled the Source of Chaos and used Source Essence—what she calls “spell points”—to strengthen or create magical effects 265.
- Her Wild Magic bloodline allowed her to learn magic by capturing memories 295.
- Her former party forbade her use of Nasar’s Prank after its unstable effects disrupted several companions 295.
- Her earlier spellcasting left her with many high-circle spell slots, even after she became a Ranger 332.
- Her curse prevents her from using her old bloodline spells. She formerly used Transformation Spell to grow gills underwater, but cannot rely on it in her current condition 294 499.
Ranger and Fey Magic
Shalti channels divine spells through sacred World Tree wood. This replaces the direct connection to the Magic Web that her curse took away 294.
| Spell / Ability | Documented use or limitation |
|---|---|
| Air Bubble | Second-level conjuration that surrounds a willing creature’s head with fresh air for 24 hours 294. |
| Thorn Hail Spell | First-circle conjuration that fills ammunition with thorns, producing a damaging burst around the impact 295. |
| Entangle Spell / Capturing Strike | Uses plants or magically generated vines to restrain enemies; applies control through arrows and, while dominated, a dagger 295 331 470. |
| Wind Creation Spell | Creates a wall of raging air to halt fleeing harpies. The storm gathering afterward is explicitly not caused by her spell 295. |
| Fog Spell | Fires an arrow that releases obscuring fog, dividing a battlefield or creating cover for Tang Qi 364 423. |
| Misty Step | Repeatedly repositions during combat. An attempted casting fails when she lacks her World Tree bow 314 332. |
| Elemental Absorption | Protects her during a Fireball ambush 330. |
| Item Locator | Uses a twig to point toward familiar objects, including Shivana’s World Tree axe 330. |
| Unseen Movement | Conceals a group’s passage and suppresses footsteps and armor noise. Producing light would expose their position 330. |
| Beast Befriending / Animal Talk | Befriends the Warden’s dog with cured meat and questions it about the office’s documents 407. |
| Strengthened Attributes | Second-ring transmutation that grants animal-like physical qualities; gives Tang Qi catlike grace for crossing spiderweb walkways 462. |
- As a Fey Wanderer, she possesses Fairy magic for influencing minds and resisting charm 407.
- This resistance is not absolute: Lolth’s divine Domination takes control of her body while leaving her aware of her actions 469 471.
Archery and Combat
Shalti combines ranged attacks with magical control and support.
- Imbues arrows with spells, allowing her to assist allies across considerable distances 393.
- Targets vulnerable areas, including Anduin’s claw joint and lower belly 393.
- Uses restraints and repeated teleportation to occupy soldiers rather than simply kill them, buying Dawn time to attack their spellcaster 332.
- Has fast footwork, strong kicks, excellent balance, and substantial flexibility. She crosses spiderwebs in high heels and later supports herself horizontally while holding onto Tang Qi 462 470 498.
Singing
Her clear voice is compared to bells echoing through an empty valley 293.
- Performs with Tang Qi and the others to draw shy Pixies out of hiding and persuade them to donate Fairy Dust 293.
- Suggests singing when the party struggles with acting, prompting Tang Qi to consider turning the production into a musical 305.
Physical Traits and Limitations
- Heat retention: Has a slightly higher body temperature than humans and warms Tang Qi’s dangerously cold hands against her body 296.
- Environmental awareness: Tracks retreating enemies and notices hidden observers, including the ambush at the Kling residence 330 450.
- Cannot swim: Her earlier reliance on magically grown gills left her without that practical skill; Tang Qi rescues her after she inhales water 499.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- World Tree bow — Willow-woven sacred wood from Mr. Potato’s branches; serves as her Ranger spellcasting focus and carries Ebony Forest’s blessing. It can deliver her magic through arrows 294 314 393.
- Magical quiver — Decorated with lavender carvings and a pink haze. Always holds ten magical arrows tipped with Mr. Potato’s leaves, regardless of how many she draws; their Feywild magic can befuddle targets 393.
- Rope enchanted with Rope Trick — Opens a temporary extradimensional space once per day for one hour 294.
- Rope of Entanglement — Chosen as a reward because it saves a spell slot and restrains more strongly than her capturing strike. Used to bind a Drow and capture an escaping Intellect Devourer 403 410 452.
- Books — Reads widely, including Children’s Questions from the Tyron Empire; searches lost texts for magic-ship knowledge 293 319 320.
- Night Shadow’s map — Guides her and Tang Qi through the Golden Country’s ruins toward Falto’s remains 494.
- Dimensional Bag — Used to recover Falto’s buried body 498.
- Poisoned dagger — Given by Lolth during the forced confrontation with Tang Qi; carries spider venom. It is not established as her usual weapon 470.
Relationships
- Tang Qi Weinberg — Traveling companion whose unusual abilities continually interest her. She risks her life to save him, fears losing him, and develops feelings she struggles to articulate. She calls them “ordinary friends” and asks him to respect the privacy of her thoughts 319 426 452 494 497.
- Markwen — Former adventuring companion and Ranger instructor. She respects his decisions concerning Ebony Forest, though she does not always share his position 294 320 324.
- Merlin Hal — Learned Wild Magic under her guidance and shared knowledge of magic ships in return. His voluntary sacrifice remains an important memory for her 265 319 440 452.
- House Hal — Regards her as a benefactor and protects the secret of her refusal to become the Obelisk Tower’s source. She also supplied the family with a World Tree woodcutting axe 265 330.
- Black Snake — Former party companion who handled worldly matters and led the survivors out of the Great Desert ruins after Falto’s death 407 452.
- Falto — Former party priest and companion. Recovering his abandoned remains becomes her reason for returning to the Golden Country 407 492 497.
- Gravel — Former member of the Minions of the Ebony Forest; later describes her appearance to Rumi 132 319.
- Mr. Potato / World Tree — Grants the blessing and sacred wood that make her replacement spellcasting possible 294 393.
- Night Wind — Fellow infiltrator. His experiences with Drow matriarchs initially make him recoil from her; they later work together in the Warden’s office 366 407.
- Lolth — Forces Shalti to attack Tang Qi through divine Domination, exploiting her attachment to him to stage a betrayal 469 470 471.
