The War Was About to Begin
Seeing the Papagana tribe's great wizard lying decapitated among the ruins, Li Feng, head of the Chinese peacekeeping force's medical team, felt utterly miserable.
Still, he could make out a few clues.
The great wizard's head didn't look as if someone had violently beaten it off. It seemed more likely that a roof beam had crushed it—or that it had been burned through.
Even so, Li Feng didn't dare voice his suspicions, afraid the tribe might misunderstand. They had just suffered a catastrophe, after all, and there was no telling whether they might look for someone to take their anger out on.
"Warriors of Papagana! We love peace, we cherish kindness, and we gladly welcome every friend. But vicious, despicable jackals will never stop trying to devour our flesh and drag the light into darkness! The Durunu tribe killed our great wizard. They are bandits—damned bandits! We will have our revenge! From this day onward, Papagana and Durunu are mortal enemies. We fight to the death! To the death!"
At some point, the Papagana chief, Manbu Aruguo, stood beside the crumbling walls, his body wrapped in bandages, and proclaimed his vow of vengeance. He raised a revolver and pulled the trigger, firing an angry shot into the sky.
"Revenge!"
"Kill every Durunu!"
" avenge the great wizard!"
"Revenge! Kill them all!"
The Papagana people joined in, shouting like mad. Those with weapons even fired into the sky to vent their fury. How could anyone let such a deep-seated blood feud go unanswered?
Gunshots rang out, one after another.
The nearby Chinese peacekeeping soldiers tensed at once, thinking the fighting had started up again. They hurriedly worked their bolts and took up positions, surrounding the tribal school, where people were still hard at work.
