The vehicles had to be locked, and their belongings closely watched. Otherwise, those dark-skinned locals might look all smiles, friendly and kind, but in the blink of an eye, they could steal everything you owned, right down to the last screw.
To be precise, the very concept of stealing didn't exist in their minds. How could something done by Black people be called "stealing"? It should be called taking!

The cost of managing them ate into too much of the profit, so it was better to leave them to their own devices and let them die for all anyone cared. Amid the chaos, they might even be able to fleece them a little more and pick up some scraps of profit here and there—making the most of the situation.
