The Visitors Meant Trouble
"Hey! Yamamoto, Yamamoto, a car's coming! Who is it? Get up, Yamamoto!"
Sakurai Norika, listening from the tent next door, soon cried out excitedly.
Who else could be driving down the road at this hour?
Maybe the people from the trading company arranged by the embassy had finally come to pick them up. Thank Amaterasu! Those slowpokes had finally arrived.
"I hear them! I'm coming!"
Yamamoto Takeo had barely slept in his clothes. He sprang straight up from his bedroll.
Sakurai Norika's voice and Yamamoto Takeo's movements also roused Okamoto Fujitora from his doze. He mumbled, "Uh, what's going on?"
"A car's coming, Mr. Okamoto. You stay lying down. I'll go check."
Yamamoto Takeo unzipped the tent flap. At once, he saw a dozen beams of light approaching, one after another.
As soon as he stepped out of the tent, the infrared night light on the RV behind him automatically switched on, bathing him in bright light.
The little gadgets only cost a few bucks apiece, but they could provide a small area of illumination as well as a measure of security.
The approaching vehicles spotted the RV's night light, turned slightly, and headed straight toward them.
Only then did Yamamoto Takeo get a clear look: two Grand Cherokees, each fitted with off-road lights on the roof that illuminated the road ahead like broad daylight, near and far alike.
From their route, it was obvious they weren't just passing by. They were coming straight for him.
He immediately grew excited and shouted at the top of his lungs, "Ms. Sakurai! Mr. Okamoto! Our people are here!"
