Being bold, attentive, and thick-skinned was the surest way to win a woman over.
Under normal circumstances, once rejected or rebuffed, most people wisely chose to back off rather than make things awkward for both sides. But only a few were willing to swallow their pride, persist to the end, and keep pestering the other person.
